The Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR) is the largest house staff union in the United States. We are a local of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), representing over 17,000 resident physicians who are dedicated to improving residency training and education, advancing patient care, and expanding healthcare access for our communities. Job Summary:

The primary role of the Researcher is to provide analytical support to CIR’s new organizing campaigns; they will be a member of the Strategic Campaigns team and work closely with CIR’s New Organizing Team. The Researcher is responsible for compiling and analyzing financial, legal, and industry data on hospitals, medical schools, and the healthcare system. Researchers also educate CIR leaders, staff, and allies on their findings to build strategic campaigns involving members, elected officials, and other community organizations.

Job Responsibilities:

• Understanding health system operations including finance, structure and governance, and how they relate to residents.  Understanding revenue streams, key decision-makers, borrowing/investing, sources of funding in acute-care teaching hospitals. 
• Understanding how to monitor industry trends and their impact on teaching hospital operations.       
• Ability to perform power analysis and find ways to build strategic campaigns around industry knowledge.
• Understanding resident daily work life, the structure of training programs, terminology, and role in hospital operations.       
• Ability to analyze regulatory documents including financial statements, cost reports, and IRS filings.
• Familiarity with concepts in academic study design; ability to understand and critically analyze clinical and policy-related studies and journal articles.   
• Mastery of arithmetic, basic statistics, and related software such as Microsoft Excel.
• Familiarity with labor law, libel/free speech laws, and major laws related to the health care industry.       
• Knowledge of Healthcare Economics, Hospital Budgeting, and financial analysis
• Ability to think critically through problems.
• Ability to facilitate the learning of others.

Qualifications:

•  4-year degree, BA/BS preferred
• Minimum 2 years relevant research/organizing experience
•  Analytical skills in mathematics and statistics
• Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple tasks and think critically
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and, Google Suite  
• Valid driver’s license
• Effective written and oral communication
• Proficiency in internet and database searching
• Ability to work long hours
• Willing to travel
