The Opportunity: 

The Curatorial Fellow supports the Curatorial Department at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in all aspects of operations and offers immersive training for those interested in pursuing a curatorial career, particularly in contemporary art and sculpture. Reporting to the Senior Curator, the Fellow is a key member of the Curatorial Department, participating in a full range of projects both in the Museum and in the Sculpture Park. For the incoming Curatorial Fellow, projects will include working on the upcoming New England Triennial (opening Spring 2022) and contributing to the research, writing and planning of upcoming exhibitions, acquisitions, and Sculpture Park commissions and loans. The Fellow will also have the opportunity to manage an exhibition or outdoor commission during this two-year appointment.

 

In This Role You Will:

  • Research, organize, and coordinate exhibitions
  • Research and write about artworks for exhibition and acquisition
  • Assist in the care, maintenance, and organization of the permanent collection
  • Write and edit didactics and labels
  • Provide installation design and planning support
  • Draft press releases, prepare Powerpoints, participate in advisory committee meetings
  • Suggest public speakers and organize innovative exhibitions-related programming in collaboration with the Engagement Department; lead public tours and present during museum guide staff training
  • Write grants, and occasionally participate in donor-related events and other development opportunities


Qualifications:

Education and Experience:         

  • MA in Art History, or Curatorial/Museum Studies
  • Previous museum or gallery experience

 

Skills/Qualifications:    

  • Proven research, writing and editing skills.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to multitask and respond quickly
  • Understanding of and passion for contemporary art, with professional goals in the curatorial field
  • Strong public speaking skills are a plus
  • A strong commitment to diversity and inclusion
  • Applicants from historically underrepresented backgrounds (particularly BIPOC candidates) are encouraged to apply
  • Being a team player with a positive attitude is essential; we are a small, dedicated team who support each other
  • Ability or interest in working collaboratively with artists and fellow museum professionals is a must
  • Design skills are a plus (InDesign/Photoshop or video/web editing experience)

 

Other:  

  • This is a funded position that is 24 months in length.
  • The position is 4/days a week, 8/hours a day.
  • This position requires occasional weekday evening and weekend hours as needed to accommodate department needs.
