Public Defender Services of Lane County is looking for a misdemeanor trial attorney to join our team of dedicated attorneys and staff in Oregon’s beautiful Willamette Valley. The ideal candidate will have the ability to balance the competing needs of effective negotiation and zealous trial advocacy while working for an office striving to be a state-wide leader in criminal defense.

The job puts you in contact with people from every walk of life, and we are seeking a candidate who can defend the people that society has cast aside, craft thoughtful legal arguments and wade through mountains of discovery to find that one key piece of evidence that everyone else overlooked. The best candidate will be able to triage a heavy caseload, fearlessly take cases to trial when it is in the client’s best interest to do so, and hammer out thoughtful resolutions for clients who want to resolve their case without litigation.

Job Responsibilities

Full time trial attorneys are generally responsible for a caseload of 20 to 30 new cases a month. Attorneys in our office are the first person a client sees in the jail, and they are responsible for the case from the day the Court appoints us to whenever the case is finally resolved, including referring cases for appeal and fixing sentencing issues. Attorneys are tireless advocates in and out of the courtroom, with strong client skills, professional in their dealings with everyone in the criminal justice system, and able to interact successfully in an office of 42 other legal professionals.

Applicants must be members of the Oregon State Bar in good standing, or actively awaiting Oregon Bar results. For out of state candidates: It takes 3 to 5 months to transfer a membership to Oregon, and we can’t wait that long, but please feel free to apply so you’re on our radar for future positions. Pay depends on experience. Previous trial experience is fantastic, but we are more interested in your work ethic and commitment to public defense, regardless of your background. PDSLC is an equal opportunity employer.
