JOB SUMMARY

Hillcrest is seeking a dynamic leader to serve as Chief Philanthropy Officer (CPO). The ideal candidate will have the natural ability to encourage and develop positive relationships with donors over time, helping them connect with the nonprofit mission of the organization and make charitable gifts of impact that sustain the organization.  

The CPO reports directly to the President & CEO and works closely with him, members of the Board of Directors, residents, and others to cultivate and solicit sustaining gifts. The CPO participates in strategic planning for the organization and oversees planning for the Philanthropy department, creating and pursuing actionable strategies that result in transformative giving.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Planning & Program Development

o  Develop and implement a comprehensive and actionable strategic plan for the Department that incorporates major giving, planned giving, annual giving, foundation and corporate giving, and special events. 

o  Create and maintain policies, plans, and programs to meet strategic plan objectives.  

o  Organize a case for charitable support for all donor opportunities. Educate and encourage donors regarding planned giving, bequests, and legacy opportunities.

Leadership & Engagement

o  Prepare the CEO and key stakeholders (Board members, residents, and others) to assist in the cultivation and solicitation of major gifts. 

o  Encourage and engage the participation of residents and Board members and other volunteers.

Donor Relations

o  Identify and cultivate relationships with new potential donors with high-giving capacity.

o  Strengthen and nurture relationships with existing donors.

o  Build and strengthen relationships with community partners, including foundations and corporations whose priorities align with the needs of Hillcrest.

o  Plan and host events both to engage and encourage donors to give and to express appreciation for their generosity.  

o  Broaden the base of community support and involvement in Hillcrest’s fundraising.

o  Contract with fundraising specialists such as grant writers, event planners, production resources, and others as needed.

o  Develop and track proposals and reports for all foundation and corporate fundraising.

o  Maintain and protect confidential information, oversee and control confidential matters and documents.

o  Work to ensure ongoing major gift revenue growth with a strategic focus on retaining and upgrading existing donors while building a robust pipeline of prospects.

o  Develop fundraising strategies and methods or activities to ensure proper acknowledgment, recognition, and stewardship of donors.

Department Leadership

o  Supervise, educate, and lead the Philanthropy team in their respective responsibilities.

o  Develop and manage the revenue and expense budgets for fund development activities.

o  Work with Marketing staff to develop fundraising materials, events, and outreach activities that enhance Hillcrest’s brand in presentations and communication pieces.

o  Create and execute a strategy for a large, sustained base of annual individual donors.

o  Oversee the management of the donor database to ensure the accuracy of all information and reports.

Results Needed

o  Raise monies necessary to meet the charitable and long-term capital needs of the organization, according to annual fundraising goals.

o  Ensure processes are in place for timely receipt, acknowledgment, and allocation of gifts according to the requirements of the IRS and the Donor.

o  Submit monthly donation reports to the CEO.     

o  Prepare Quarterly Reports for the Board Philanthropy Advisory Committee.

o  Build and maintain positive relationships with others.


REQUIREMENTS

Required Qualifications

o  Bachelor’s degree, preferably in nonprofit management, communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field.

o  Progressive track record of cultivating, managing, and leading major gift campaigns, managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources, and demonstrated ability to solicit and secure significant major gifts.

o  Proven track record of building and maintaining productive relationships with multiple stakeholders.

o  Experience in supervising and mentoring a team of fundraising associates.

o  Experience in budget development, setting departmental goals and tracking efforts. 

o  Superb written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.

o  Ability to comfortably speak in public.

o  Creative, self-starter, cooperative.

o  Computer skills including MS Office and donor database software (i.e., Raiser’s Edge).

o  Criminal Background clearance (LiveScan) as required by regulation.

o  Ability to work with diverse populations.

o  Available to work evenings or weekends when required.

o  Adherence to the provisions of the Code of Conduct Handbook, including the values and expectations.

o  Commitment to Hillcrest’s Mission and Vision Statements and Core Values.

o  A current valid California driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

o  Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE).

o  At least two to five years of demonstrated success developing and leading a nonprofit philanthropy program.

o  Experience leading a capital campaign.

o  Experience or knowledge in adult and aging services, healthcare, or social services; personal experience caregiving for an older adult.
