University Settlement Society of New York is one of New York City’s most dynamic human services institutions, with an impressive legacy as the first settlement house in the country, serving over 40,000 New Yorkers with a range of critical social services at 31 sites across Manhattan and Brooklyn. Together, these sites offer a comprehensive network of programs that includes quality early childhood programs, afterschool and youth development programs, extensive mental health services, eviction prevention and benefits assistance, adult literacy, arts enrichment programs, support for the aging, and community center resources. In total, University Settlement operates $40 million in programming.


The Door, founded in 1972, The Door is New York City’s premiere youth development organization, providing comprehensive support to 10,000 vulnerable New Yorkers ages 12 to 24 each year. Our integrated programs – quality health and wellness care, innovative education and career programs, essential legal services, runaway and homeless youth support, and cutting-edge arts opportunities – are under one roof and all for free. The Door’s mission is to empower young people to reach their potential by providing comprehensive youth services in a diverse and caring environment. We recognize the importance of working beyond a young person’s vulnerabilities to help them develop connections to positive, supportive relationships and challenging, meaningful experiences.


In partnership with and co-located at The Door, Broome Street Academy is a unique charter high school that prepares New York City’s most vulnerable youth for a successful future through rigorous academics paired with supports of The Door. Broome Street Academy serves 330 students annually in grades 9 – 12.


A particular focus area for the organization(s) today is the expansion of our major donor program. We are seeking a talented Managing Director of Institutional Advancement to lead strategic efforts in cultivating and maintaining strong relationships with individual donors. Working in partnership with the CEO and executive teams, the Managing Director will develop and implement a strategy to engage individuals in our organizations’ work with the goal of gaining their financial investment. 


Responsibilities:

  • Plan, direct and oversee all private fundraising initiatives, including individual giving program, special events, corporate giving, leadership giving and annual appeals
  • Serve as a senior leader on the Development team, help to shape the overall Agency development plan
  • Expand the strategy that will attract individual donors and build sustainable, long-term philanthropic relationships between the organizations and its major donors, while meeting annual and campaign fundraising objectives
  • Cultivate long-term relationships with prospects through individual visits, personalized correspondence and participation in cultivation programs and events to educate donors about the needs and priorities of the organization(s)
  • Supervise and direct the work of the Assistant Director of Events and Donor Relations Manager
  • Partner with Communications team to develop a multi-faceted communications plan to attract, retain and increase the support of individual donors and create a pipeline of prospective major donors  
  • Shepherd fundraising efforts for select programs and funders, including prospecting and research, to identify new sources of support, proposal and report writing, and donor management
  • Create engagement strategies, gift ideas, messaging and a case for support – from challenges to matches to auctions to naming opportunities
  • Develop statistical and financial materials and assess the costs and benefits of various fundraising activities
  • Engage Board members in the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of prospective donors
  • Work in conjunction with CEO, executive teams and members of the Board to recruit and retain new Board members


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; advanced degree preferred
  • Five to seven years’ experience in non-profit major gifts fundraising, donor development, annual fund development; related experience will be considered 
  • Demonstrated track record of successful philanthropic fundraising including planning for, growing and managing a successful development program
  • Proven track record of planning and organizing special events
  • Success in soliciting and securing support from individuals 
  • Excellent communications skills, including the ability to make persuasive presentations to donors, board members and other audiences
  • Candidate must have exceptional interpersonal abilities as well as strong organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities, organize workload and manage competing demands
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends as necessary
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point
  • Knowledge and experience working with Raiser’s Edge preferred
  • Commitment to the missions of University Settlement, The Door and Broome Street Academy
