FUSE Corps is a national nonprofit that partners with local governments to help urban communities thrive. With offices in Boston and San Francisco, we work with cities on a wide range of issues such as economic and workforce development, healthcare, justice reform, public safety, climate change, education, transportation, and infrastructure. Our approach is based on an executive fellowship program that is designed to accelerate civic innovation, cross-sector collaboration, and community-based problem solving. We work closely with government partners to design year-long strategic projects with clear deliverables. We then conduct a national executive search for each unique position to recruit experienced leaders with the potential to achieve transformational impact. By helping to craft public policy, roll out new initiatives, and improve existing services, we help governments to work better for the people they serve.

Since FUSE was founded six years ago, we have placed 100 fellows in 21 cities including Seattle, San Francisco, San José, Los Angeles, Denver, New Orleans, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC. The average FUSE fellow brings a graduate degree and 20 years of professional experience, often in Fortune 500 companies. The FUSE program model also prioritizes diversity and inclusion in every element of our work, including placing a cohort that currently averages 60% professionals of color, 55% women, and 30% first-generation immigrants. After their fellowship year, more than 50% of alumni have continued to work in civic leadership and 90% of our partner government agencies have returned each year with requests to host additional fellows.

The FUSE business model is based primarily on fee-for-service government contracts, with earned income currently representing 85% of our annual operating budget. Over the next three years, FUSE will double in scale to 80 projects per year across 25 cities in order to become 100% financially self-sufficient. FUSE’s philanthropic partners such as the Omidyar Network, Irvine Foundation, and Kresge Foundation are helping to accelerate this expansion trajectory through a generous infusion of growth capital. FUSE is also in the process of piloting additional program services and strategic partnerships that will diversify our revenue streams and increase mission impact. Additionally, we are working to expand our publishing, speaking, and thought-leadership in order to magnify FUSE’s contribution to the broader movement around helping cities keep pace with the rapidly changing needs of their communities.

Job Opportunity

FUSE’s Strategic Partnerships team manages both current and prospective government partners as well as the philanthropic partners who help to underwrite the cost of fellowships that cannot otherwise be covered through public funds. Working as a social enterprise, this team is responsible not only for generating almost all of FUSE’s annual operating revenue, but also for developing and defining the strategic engagements through which FUSE fellows will address some of the most pressing issues facing urban communities. The Strategic Partnerships team currently includes two Directors and an Associate in the San Francisco office, and we are now adding a Director in the Boston office as we continue to expand our work nationally. Each Director manages a portfolio of city and county partners around the country, and FUSE’s first Boston-based Strategic Partnerships Director will help to expand our work in major metro areas throughout the East Coast and Midwest. The responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Partner closely with the CEO, President & COO, Vice President of Strategic Partnerships & External Affairs, other Directors and team members to develop and execute a partnership development strategy that meets the organization’s annual revenue and program goals.
  • Manage a portfolio of major city and county governments that includes both current partners and new prospects. Cultivate relationships through in-person site visits, meetings with civic leaders, engagement with top executives, and collaborations with those responsible for budgeting, procurement, contracting, and legal approval in each local government.
  • Identify regional priorities and the roles that FUSE fellows can play to help address those issues, specifying the potential host agency, project supervisor, and distinct goals of each unique fellowship project. Ensure that FUSE’s quality metrics are maintained with regard to the success-determining factors of each individual fellowship as well as maintaining the overall diversity of project types and geographies that FUSE is actively working to support.
  • Develop a detailed description for each role by interviewing stakeholders and managing the host agency’s review and approval process. Within the scoping process for each project, help governments prioritize opportunities for cross-sector collaboration, community engagement, human-centered design, data-driven decision-making, and results-orientated policymaking.
  • Identify and help secure sufficient funding for each project by focusing on the government’s standard budget process and/or, when necessary, engaging with local and national philanthropic funders who can help to underwrite projects. Oversee the successful completion of all contracting processes to meet specific programmatic deadlines for each cohort.
  • Conduct ongoing relationship management and program support, potentially including participation in the recruitment and selection of fellows, organizing welcome receptions to help fellows engage with community members, monitoring partner satisfaction, sustaining current fellows through contract extensions, and securing renewal contracts to place new fellows.



  • Passion for and commitment to the mission of FUSE Corps and a belief in the power of cross-sector collaboration and civic innovation to positively impact society’s biggest challenges.
  • 10+ years of significant leadership experience in local government, nonprofit organizations or private corporations, particularly in roles that require direct responsibility for partnership cultivation, business development, sales, and/or fundraising.
  • Highly-developed emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish trust and effective communications with a wide array of stakeholders ranging from community members and nonprofit partners to foundation executives and government leaders. 
  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, with an understanding of how to adjust messages for a variety of audiences and an ability to effectively communicate the compelling nature of an investment opportunity to potential clients and supporters.
  • Tenaciously optimistic and goal-oriented, with the ability to remain flexible and develop creative solutions in pursuit of always maintaining forward momentum. Strong multi-tasker with the capacity to continually balance competing priorities within a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively on a small team with limited resources, supporting the success of all colleagues and prioritizing the organization’s overall goals above personal achievement.
  • Ability to travel regularly in support of the organization and its goals, including travel time across the United States that averages 25% (one week per month). Most travel will be flexible on dates and can generally accommodate various schedules of availability.

We work with four dental carriers - Delta Dental, Aetna, Guardian Dental, and MetLife to offer a high and a low national dental PPO plan. Aetna also will make available an EPP plan in many states.


We also offers a high and a low vision plan nationally through two different carriers: Aetna and Vision Service Plan (VSP). These plan options ensure that you can choose the best plan and carrier for your individual vision needs.
