The Broadway Mall Association (BMA) is a non-profit that stewards, advocates and cares for the landscaped malls on Broadway from 70th Street to 168th Street. In addition to upgrading the 10.6 acres of parkland, BMA installs winter lighting and stages world-class public art exhibitions.

The Broadway Mall Association seeks an Executive Director to lead the organization into its next phase. Reporting to the Chair, President, and Board of Directors, the Executive Director will execute the strategic vision, taking responsibility for fundraising, programs, communication and operations. This is a full-time position with flexibility. The ED will supervise a small staff and focus on these goals that guide all strategies:

  • Lead all fundraising activities—individual giving, events, institutional funders, and government grants
  • Oversee funding and implementing the organization’s new Restoration and Management Plan aimed toward environmental sustainability.
  • Expand, strengthen and diversify the Board of Directors to enable the organization’s ambitious program goals.

Fund Development and External Relations

  • Lead a robust and creative fundraising effort, raising funds across multiple sectors
  • Develop and implement a campaign plan to launch the Restoration and Management Plan, a phased multi-million-dollar effort to restore and preserve the malls
  • Grow contributed income to ensure continued financial stability and meet the programmatic goals
  • Identify and secure new sources of support and deepen relations with core groups of funders
  • Increase awareness and promote BMA’s brand and public image to raise the public profile
  • Position staff and Board as an expert resource for the media, city, state and national policymakers, researchers, and others seeking models of urban horticulture, public private partnerships, and public space renewal

Programmatic Leadership

  • In collaboration with the Director of Horticulture, oversee the implementation of the Restoration and Management Plan, and provide direction and oversight to a range of horticulture projects and capital improvements
  • Oversee public art installations
  • Organize and direct volunteers and volunteer events
  • Provide oversight to staff and Board committees

Leadership and Management

  • Serve as a leader in urban green space and environmental best practices
  • Establish collaborative networks with communities impacted by environmental inequality
  • Ensure effective systems to track progress, and regularly evaluate program components to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the Board, funders, and other constituents.
  • Lead, coach, develop, and retain staff

Board Relations

  • Maintain a collaborative working relationship with the Board Directors to ensure that governance and management are aligned
  • Engage individual Board Directors, helping to capitalize on their strengths and capabilities, channeling their energies toward mission and projects
  • Implement Board policies, goals, and objectives, and—in conjunction with the Board Chair, President, Executive Committee and committee chairs—collaborate in planning and managing all Board meetings and committee meetings as required
  • Expand Board diversity and effectiveness by assisting in identifying, recruiting and developing new Board Directors
  • Serve as ex-officio on all committees

General Management

  • Maintain strong working relationships with New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, the DOE Fund, Goddard Riverside, Lincoln Square Business Improvement District, and other collaborating partners
  • Ensure that day-to-day operations are efficiently organized and administered
  • Oversee and monitor budgets and finances in partnership with the Board Treasurer and the Finance Committee

The ideal candidate will bring the following experience and qualifications

  • A B.A. degree or more with a preferred minimum of five years experience with executive-level management, leadership responsibility, and experience in non-profit or the public sector
  • A track record as a good writer and effective communicator, including the presence and credibility to serve as an enthusiastic spokesperson
  • Media contacts and an ability to manage the press and integrate new media and social media
  • Depth of contacts in government and experience with understanding and navigating public policy, public funding streams and government agencies
  • Strong communications, financial management and analytic skills, combined with a record of success in motivating people

Personal Characteristics

  • Committed to core mission, with an informed passion for environmental sustainability, climate change mitigation, urban green space, and community building
  • Flexible but decisive, with a naturally consultative and participative management style
  • A person of integrity who engenders trust and confidence among all constituencies
  • A creative, charismatic and visionary leader with the ability to bring out the best in others
  • A patient, diplomatic and skillful negotiator with an open mind
  • Emotionally mature, with a sense of humor and the sensitivity to work with diverse populations and personalities
