About the General Counsel Role:
BRIC is seeking an experienced General Counsel to lead contract management and provide strategic legal oversight across the organization. This dynamic role will involve addressing a range of legal issues, requiring someone who is proactive and adaptable to new challenges. The General Counsel will manage the full contract lifecycle, ensuring compliance, mitigating risks, and supporting our administrative and programming departments. Working closely with the President and Executive Team, this person will guide legal strategy to support organizational goals and uphold best practices in contract and compliance standards. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in contract law and experience navigating diverse legal matters.
What You’ll Do in the Role:
The General Counsel will be responsible for the following in addition to any other projects as assigned by their manager, the Chief Operating Officer:
Strategic Legal Guidance and Executive Counsel
- Oversee BRIC’s legal portfolio, managing diverse legal matters such as contracts, compliance, and risk, while ensuring alignment with organizational goals and embracing new challenges in a dynamic, evolving legal environment.
- Collaborate with senior management as a key member of BRIC’s executive team, providing counsel and strategic advice on contracts, legal compliance, and organizational risks, and supporting strategies for contract and other negotiations.
- Offer proactive risk mitigation strategies to the President and other executive team members, helping to safeguard BRIC’s interests and ensure alignment with legal standards and best practices.
- Lead initiatives to enhance compliance and streamline BRIC’s contracting processes by refining best practices, developing contract templates, and standardizing operating procedures across the organization.
- Liaise with the Board or ad hoc committees as needed, providing legal counsel and guidance on key organizational matters.
- Engage additional legal support as needed for litigation or complex matters requiring specialized expertise.
- Act as counsel and liaison to external employment lawyers under contract, coordinating efforts and providing guidance.
Contracts Management and Operations
- Oversee BRIC’s contract management system, ensuring efficient lifecycle management from review to execution, while collaborating with departments to negotiate terms and serve as the primary point of contact for contract changes and external negotiations.
- Administer and oversee contracts for key areas, including artist agreements, media partnerships, and city-funded capital projects, ensuring compliance with regulations, alignment with BRIC’s standards, and protection of the organization’s interests.
- Apply deep institutional knowledge and strong analytical skills to effectively manage each stage of the contract lifecycle: reviewing, resolving issues, negotiating, executing, and closing out contracts as needed.
- Manage intellectual property (IP) contracts for BRIC TV and other media initiatives, ensuring all agreements protect BRIC’s creative assets and align with industry standards for IP rights, content ownership, and licensing.
- Maintain meticulous records of all contract-related correspondence and documentation, ensuring easy access and compliance with record-keeping requirements.

- Experience & Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree with four or more years of directly related work experience.
- Contract Management Expertise: Strong foundation in contract law, particularly for capital projects, insurance, and real estate.
- Detail-Oriented and Compliant: Focused on accurate documentation and adherence to legal and organizational standards.
- Process Improvement: Skilled at refining contract templates and streamlining procedures across departments.
- Strategic Problem-Solving: Analytical thinker with experience in issue resolution and risk management.
- Collaborative Negotiation and Advisory Skills: Effective communicator with a track record of successful contract negotiations and executive-level counsel.
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree and admission to the New York State Bar (or eligibility for in-house counsel registration in New York).
- 5+ years of experience in contract law, ideally with a focus on nonprofit, media, or entertainment sectors.
- Communication: An emotionally intelligent, values, and results-driven team player who can collaborate across departments and at all levels of the organization. An excellent communicator who prioritizes customer service.

Other Things to Know:
- Compensation: The rate for this position is $57.00/hour.
- Status and location: This is a part-time, hybrid role based in our Brooklyn office, with a commitment of 20-25 hours per week.
