Health Equity Solutions Policy & Communication Specialist Hartford, CT

The mission of Health Equity Solutions (HES) is to promote policies, programs, and practices that result in equitable access to health care, increased quality in the delivery of health care, and improved health outcomes for Connecticut residents. Health Equity Solutions’ purpose is to catalyze systemic public policy changes that advance and sustain health equity in Connecticut through a non-partisan, collaborative, results-oriented approach. To accomplish this, HES will work to shape and influence laws, policies and regulations; monitor the implementation of legislation and regulation; conduct policy analysis and research to educate and inform; engage diverse partners; convene public forums and implement campaigns; engage in communications, messaging, and media advocacy; and actively participate on related coalitions and committees. HES is currently seeking a Policy & Communication Specialist. The position has an anticipated term of 6-12 months.

Job Summary:

This individual will be responsible for policy analysis, research summaries, supporting communications planning and execution, and ensuring timely engagement of HES’ advocacy networks. This will include preparing information for a variety of audiences.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Core Responsibility: Policy & Outreach

  • Analyze and summarize federal, state, and local policy that could impact health equity in
  • Connecticut. This includes health equity impact assessments of proposals on HES legislative
  • priorities and policies that impact HES’ areas of interest.
  • Analyze and summarize Connecticut’s annual budget with a health equity lens—including
  • multiple drafts of state budget in odd numbered years.
  • Draft research summaries, talking points, and presentations on health equity issues.
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Policy and other policy staff to ensure advocacy
  • materials are timely, accurate, and in plain language.
  • Other duties as assigned and relevant to the policy, communications, and advocacy goals of the organization.
  • Core Responsibility: Communications/Advocacy

• Prepare action alerts and advocacy tools relevant to HES priorities and ad hoc policy issues.

  • Maintain a communication calendar to ensure regular social media, blog, and email updates on advocacy priorities.
  • Draft and schedule social media content and newsletter content.
  • Collaborate with other policy staff to update website and develop advocacy tools such as fact
  • sheets, talking points, testimony templates, event notifications and registration materials, social
  • media, and blog posts; experience creating infographics or laying out flyers a plus.
  • Support the development and execution of events and communications to support coalition
  • work, community engagement, and advocacy actions; includes technology support for webinars, note taking at meetings, and ensuring timely invitation to and reminders of upcoming meetings or events.

Bachelor’s degree preferred. Experience may substitute for relevant degree.

Knowledge of and passion for health equity and advocacy preferred; knowledge of and skills in communications, coalition building, web design, research.

Policy analysis/policy communications; skilled at creating, summarizing, and presenting information in a concise and clear manner for multiple audiences; strong problem-solving skills; strong research skills; excellent interpersonal, computer, verbal, and written communication skills; time management; excellent organizational skills mandatory.

Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint; comfortable learning and using internet applications; social media platforms.

Individual self-starter; works well as part of a team and in a fast-paced environment; able to organize and manage multiple activities at a time; detail oriented; excellent at pivoting when the unexpected arises; excellent oral and written communication skills; strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Must be thoughtful about issues of health equity and health policy though specific expertise in these areas is not required.
