Lutheran Social Services of New York, Inc. (LSSNY) has been strengthening lives, families and communities for more than 125 years. LSSNY has strengthened lives, families and communities through its foster care, early childhood education, hunger prevention, immigration, supportive housing and special education programs. LSSNY is supported primarily by government fees and contracts and is qualified as a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Chief Financial Officer is responsible for the development, oversight and coordination of the financial service operations of the agency and related subsidiaries. S/he has responsibility for developing and maintaining the financial systems, processes and procedures needed to process transactions that represent the activity of LSS, and translate that data into useful, actionable information that supports decision making. The CFO is responsible for ensuring the balanced financial operations of the agency, meeting regulatory guidelines, and securing adequate risk management and insurances. S/he will partner with the leadership of LSS and work with the Board of Directors’ Finance and Audit Committees.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Advises the President and other Management Team members on overall Agency planning operational strategies and decisions in conjunction with the Strategic Plan

2. Ensure that accounting and financial statements are prepared in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, and that mandated reports are filed on a timely and accurate basis.

3. Oversee budget development, review and analyze financial performance and report to the President, Management, Finance Committee, Board of Directors, funders, constituents, and other audiences, as needed

4. Oversees the timely monthly closing process and production of financial reporting, including departmental reports, monthly finance package, descriptive statements and other reports as necessary

5. Oversee and lead the banking and cash management functions.

6. Ensure the successful completion of all financial audits and the fulfillment of external reporting requirements

7. Provide Finance department with a service orientation

8. Supervise and develop assigned staff within the Financial Services department

9. Ensures a high level of confidentiality with all information

10. Develop and maintain appropriate financial internal control processes to ensure accountability and transparency of financial operations. Ensure and secure adequate risk management systems for the Agency

11. Keeps President advised on major issues.

12. Effectively communicate LSS’s business objectives and financial results to multiple constituents – directors, leadership, members, foundations, and donors (potential and active).

13. Perform all other duties as necessary and assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

  • Masters degree or equivalent in finance or development field (e.g. Business, Finance, Law, Accounting)
  • Certified Public Account preferred

EXPERIENCE:

  • S/he should have a record of professional accomplishment and achievement at a leadership level at a large public or private corporation and/or nonprofit organization. Minimum of 7 years work of progressively responsible experience as a Chief Financial Officer or Comptroller in a complex, multi-funding source nonprofit organization or equivalent government agency.

  • Demonstrated ability to utilize broadly based key business fundamentals, understand the drivers of the financial health and viability of the organization, and takes responsibility for maintaining its ongoing fiscal soundness
  • Demonstrated ability to establish a systematic course of action to assure accomplishment of a specific objective, determining priorities and allocating time and resources effectively
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate, manage in the change process and energizes it on an ongoing basis, taking steps to remove barriers or accelerate it pace
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively toward solutions that generally benefit all involved parties to accomplish overall organizational objectives
  • Well-honed strategic thinking skills and the ability to be flexible and adaptable in order to revise strategies as necessary.
  • Must have the highest integrity, sound judgment, and an unquestioned level of sensitivity, and respect for diversity in all forms.
  • Demonstrated ability to use professional/technical knowledge, skills, experience and judgment to accomplish a result
  • Demonstrated ability to function as a ‘citizen’ of the larger LSSNY organization and works to enhance its image and overall presence
  • Fanatic about details
  • Must have the highest integrity, sound judgment, and an unquestioned level of sensitivity, and respect for diversity in all forms.
