Position Summary: As the Communications team leader, the Director of Communications is charged with planning and executing Prep’s communications strategies. The position is responsible for Prep for Prep’s overall public message development and dissemination and plays a central role in crafting a comprehensive, mission-focused, communications plan.
The Director of Communications reports to the Executive Director.
Responsibilities for this role include, but are not limited to, these primary areas:
Strategic vision, program development, and department leadership
- In collaboration with the Executive office, craft and update the strategic vision for the Communications Department.
- Advise, assist, and train other departments in developing their communications objectives and strategies, consistent with the communications plan and the means of achieving them, including publications and social media campaigns.
- Communicate to the broad array of Prep’s constituencies; create mission-focused and compelling content for the organization’s public website, annual report, other publications, and social media outlets. Ensure that the most appropriate communication outlets and technologies are used.
- Liaise with Prep for Prep’s individual departments to assist in coordinating their communications needs. Advise department leaders on achieving their communications objectives, consistent with Prep’s overall communications vision and the means of achieving them, including publications and social media campaigns.
- Design and develop written and visual content for Prep’s communications channels. Ensure and improve the visual and editorial consistency of all Prep’s printed and electronic materials.
- Periodically update and disseminate style guide and ensure it is being followed and understood by all departments.
- Prepare the Chief Executive Officer and other Executive Team members to conceive, pitch, and respond to stories for various media outlets that can further Prep’s strategic goals or protect its brand.
- Provide strategic guidance to the Director of Development and Strategic Partnerships and the Director of Alumni Affairs to help build media and communications plans that increase donor and alumni engagement.
- Monitor the mainstream media on topics that present opportunities and challenges for Prep’s public image.
- Supervise the Assistant Director of Communications and Social Media Intern/s.
- Conduct background research on topics relevant to Prep’s public image, including trends in education and leadership development and peer organizations, partner schools, and universities.
Manage a dynamic program of digital and social media to increase public understanding of Prep for Prep’s work and social impact:
- Craft, develop, and roll out social media campaigns to meet the marketing needs for student recruitment, donor and alumni engagement, and positioning Prep as a leader in its field.
- Monitor social media, collect and report on analytics, and maintain social, editorial, and key-messaging calendars to identify trends and help the organization anticipate and respond to changes in the communications landscape.
- Supervise the drafting of website articles and other content for Prep’s various media platforms.
- Oversee the editing and customization of photography for social media, website, and in-house materials.
- Attend program events, photo shoots, and video shoots to provide in-house photography needs and production assistance.
Coordinate development and production of print and traditional media:
- Lead the production of printed publications, including writing content, proofreading, tracking deliverables for annual reports, admissions recruitment material, and other projects.
- Ensure and improve the visual and editorial consistency of all Prep’s printed and electronic materials. Periodically update and disseminate style guide and ensure it is being followed and understood by all departments.
- Produce in-house marketing materials to support donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, engagement of alumni, schools, and corporate partnerships, and student/family recruitment
- Research opportunities for expanding print, digital, and online advertising.
- Create an inventory of position statement templates to support prompt responses to address constituent needs, community issues, as well as local, regional, national, and global news/trends.
Administrative and operational responsibilities:
- Approve and process vendor invoices, track departmental expenses, and produce reports.
- Spearhead ongoing archival media asset management.
- Produce and maintain analytics reports.
- Proactively collect stories, photography, and video for potential use in materials/initiatives.
- Other responsibilities and special projects as assigned.
Skills, Experience, Competencies:
- Three or more years of work experience of leading communications within a nonprofit or educational setting
- Excellent attention to detail and proof-reading skills
- Strong writing and editing skills with ability to adapt content to different audiences
- Functional knowledge of Canva, Adobe PhotoShop, or similar design editing software
- Familiarity with social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn
- Familiarity with social media management tools such as Hootsuite or Tweetdeck
- Knowledge of/experience with video editing software
- Adept use of Microsoft Office Suite/Adobe software (Powerpoint, Excel, Word, Adobe Acrobat X)
- Ability to work independently and lead a team in a fast-paced, high-expectation environment
- Exercise discretion and good judgement in handling confidential information and in alignment with the organization’s objectives
- Possess cultural competencies working with diverse constituents, including alumni, donors, trustees, program participants, and other stakeholders
- BA required; advanced degree or relevant experience preferred
- Multilingual; with reading and writing proficiency in Spanish or Chinese a plus
