The Position


The SONYC Assistant Group Leader will report to the SONYC Program Director and work closely with SONYC staff (including group leaders, school teachers and other staff) to support the SONYC after school program at a middle school in the Bronx serving 91 students. Primary responsibilities include supporting participants during program procedures related to arrival and dismissal, attendance, and supporting various program activities. It is important that Assistant Group Leaders be able to act as a positive role model and mentor to the young people they work with, and to develop a positive, supportive culture and an effective way of dealing with challenges with students that may arise. The program site is at MS 390 (1930 Andrews Avenue South, Bronx, NY 10453.)


This is a part time position of approximately 18 hours per week. Program runs Monday through Friday from 2:20 to 5:30pm, and staff hours will be 2:00 – 5:30pm. Program runs for 36 weeks from Sept 2016 through June 2017, and the Assistant Group Leader will average 70 hours per month. Hourly rate: $14.00.




Qualifications


o  Previous after school experience, ideally with middle school aged youth

o  Associate’s Degree, or currently working toward Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree

o  Ability to collaborate effectively with other after school staff

o  Excellent written and spoken communication skills (Bilingual ability in Spanish is a plus)

o  Commitment to fostering a student-centered, safe, respectful, and productive environment for all participants, families and school partners

o  All staff must pass Dept. of Health fingerprinting clearance, and other related clearances, including a health exam and TB test before beginning work

o  All staff must also pass NYC Dept of Education fingerprinting clearance before beginning work








Responsibilities


o  Supporting program systems including attendance, incentives, safety procedures, special events, etc. (for example, monitoring participants during arrival and transitions and ensuring that participants have properly signed out and exited the building from program

o  Support Group Leaders with managing participants in a positive, supportive manner

o  Provide other administrative support for the program as delegated by Program Director or Assistant Program Director

o  Punctuality, dependability, and professional communication are highly important to successful operation of program
