The National Alliance to End Homelessness (Alliance) is an influential national nonprofit devoted to finding and advancing solutions to homelessness. We are focused on making an impact and we seek an enthusiastic new member for our Program and Policy Team. The Program and Policy Team works with communities to understand the best solutions to ending homelessness, and then with Congress and the Administration to develop strong policy and adequate resources to support those solutions. The National Field Organizer helps communities educate Congress about what is needed at the state and local levels to prevent and end homelessness.

If you are committed to helping the nation SOLVE the problem of homelessness, consider joining the Alliance.

What we are looking for:

The Alliance is looking for a talented National Field Organizer committed to helping end homelessness by building support for effective federal policy. We seek someone with a grounding knowledge of homelessness and how programs work on the local level; familiarity with the workings of Congress; a commitment to racial equity; high energy; and excellent organizational and communications skills. Digital advocacy experience is a plus. A successful Organizer will value close collaboration with team members but will also be self-motivated and able to work independently.

What you will do:

The National Field Organizer will develop and support a strong field of nonprofit, faith-based, and public sector organizations, individuals, and consumers committed to participating in the creation of strong federal homelessness policy. The National Field Organizer will work closely with the Alliance’s policy staff to create national policy priorities for ending homelessness, and identify local and state partners who will advocate for these federal policies. Results will include strong support throughout the country, leading to better funding and federal policies for effective homelessness and housing programs. The National Field Organizer will work in close collaboration with other national organizations that are mobilizing behind the effort to end homelessness and address related issues.

Tasks include:

  • Build effective relationships with the Alliance’s advocacy and education partners on the local and state levels to engage these grassroots allies in national policy initiatives.
  • Cultivate relationships with Black and Brown communities, and those disproportionately impacted by homelessness.
  • Develop and implement data-driven advocacy and education efforts in support of the organization’s policy priorities. This may include web-based advocacy components such as specialized email platforms, social media, and tools for outreach to elected officials.
  • Identify target jurisdictions for concentrated outreach.
  • Identify and build strategic relationships with existing local and state leaders in the field who can participate in these initiatives.
  • Develop new external stakeholders and leaders including state and local advocates, grassroots supporters, and consumers.
  • Keep the field network informed of policy issues and developments, strategies, and opportunities.
  • Assist the field in organizing and implementing education initiatives, including through social media, on key policies in play at the national level.
  • Create opportunities for local advocates to educate policy makers, both digitally and in-person.
  • Advise the field in messaging and educating, and provide more intensive assistance to key partners as required.
  • Assist with the planning and execution of outreach events such as the Alliance’s Capitol Hill Day.
  • Maintain partner database and ensure all relevant web pages are consistently up-to-date.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with other Alliance staff members and assume other responsibilities as assigned.

What a successful candidate will need:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • Significant experience working in or with the homelessness sector, including working with people who have lived experience of homelessness.
  • Knowledge and experience of the use of federal homelessness and housing programs at the local and state levels.
  • Strong experience and cultural competence with BIPOC communities and people with lived experience of homelessness.
  • Demonstrated commitment to reducing homelessness and poverty.
  • Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to communicate complex ideas and positions to a variety of audiences, including policy makers and local advocates.
  • Excellent oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to communicate well interpersonally and effectively manage relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize, initiate, and implement tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work to tight deadlines.
  • Strong team player.
  • Willingness to travel (post-pandemic in accordance with national safety protocols).
