The Safety Net Project (SNP) is one of thirteen independent projects at the Urban Justice Center. SNP provides direct legal and social services in the areas of public benefits access, homelessness, and tenant rights, in addition to engaging in policy advocacy and community organizing led by impacted community members (the Safety Net Activists). SNP is one of NYC’s Right to Counsel legal providers defending tenants facing eviction and is also active in various grassroots organizing campaigns fighting for housing rights. 

SNP seeks applicants for the Housing Director position. The Housing Director will lead and manage SNP’s high-volume landlord/tenant practice and provide support to SNP’s housing supervisors. SNP’s housing practice provides legal advice and right to counsel representation to tenants in eviction cases and conducts some affirmative litigation and group representation. The Housing Director’s role is to ensure that SNP’s housing staff receive high quality support and supervision, while maintaining the resources SNP needs to sustain a quality high-volume housing litigation practice and providing mentorship and leadership to the entire housing practice.  

Primary Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise SNP’s supervising attorneys and managing attorney.
  • Ensure a high standard of legal representation and ongoing professional development across SNP’s housing practice, including development and maintenance of SNP’s housing resources and practice guidance.
  • Lead SNP’s right to counsel practice in Bronx Housing Court.
  • Maintain a very reduced individual caseload, providing legal advice and representation to tenants in eviction proceedings and some affirmative litigation.
  • Working across disciplines by collaborating with other attorneys, advocates, and social workers to assess and address client needs.
  • Ensure that staff receive timely training and information regarding the latest legal developments, including maintaining a calendar of monthly training events.
  • Lead housing litigation team meetings.
  • Work with the Managing Director to ensure that SNP’s grant compliance.
  • Represent SNP in meetings with funders and assist with housing grant reporting
  • Represent SNP in housing network and coalition spaces as needed.
  • Collaborate to maintain and strengthen SNP program policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Participate in SNP’s management team.

Qualifications

  • Admitted to the New York State Bar.
  • Minimum 6 years of litigation experience in landlord-tenant law, including supervisory experience.
  • Proven management and leadership skills.
  • Excellent research, analytical, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent litigation skills and experience litigating individual and group cases in various forums.
  • Familiarity with New York City Housing Authority administrative hearings.
  • A commitment to supporting, training, and mentoring housing staff attorneys and paralegals.
  • Sound strategic judgment and the drive to originate and implement practice improvements.
  • Strong anti-oppression and social justice analysis and lens, including a deep commitment to racial justice and housing justice work.
  • Familiarity with movement lawyering approaches to civil legal services work
  • Aptitude for tenacious negotiation and advocacy.
  • Ability to balance an active caseload and management responsibilities.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, including flexibility and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work well independently and collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team of lawyers, advocates and social workers.
  • Great interpersonal communication skills and experience working with diverse communities.
  • Spanish proficiency is preferred.
