Business Development Associate

The Opportunity

CEO is currently seeking a Business Development Associate as a key role for our newly formed Business Development team. The Associate will support organizational expansion and sustainability efforts across the organization through our social enterprise.

This position will work closely with CEO’s National Director of Business Development and site directors to provide assistance with bid and proposal research and development and with the submission of proposals to create and expand transitional job opportunities for CEO participants. As this is a new position for CEO, we’re looking for an individual who is eager to take initiative and help develop and refine internal processes for the business development activities across the organization. The Associate will also support the organization’s growth and expansion efforts under the direction of the National Director of Business Development. This would include organizing and attending site visits, conducting research, and preparing proposals and concept papers.

Please note: the Business Development Associate can be based out of any CEO office in Ohio or Oklahoma.

Why this work is important

CEO has an ambitious plan to serve over 9,000 individuals annually over the next several years. In order to meet this goal, the organization must create more depth within already functional worksites while also expanding CEO’s footprint in new and existing jurisdictions. Our social enterprise work crews are the centerpiece of CEO’s growth model.  Every participant works as part of a transitional work crew to gain experience and income while concurrently working with CEO’s vocational staff to identify and secure long-term employment. CEO operates 70+ work crews across our national network that provide valuable labor and maintenance services to our customers, who are predominantly public sector agencies.  The income generated from these crews support nearly half of the organization’s overall operating budget.

Who We Are

The Center for Employment Opportunities (CEO) provides employment services to people with recent criminal convictions.  Across the United States, over 5,500 people participate in CEO each year, transitioning to employment that supports themselves, their families, and their communities.

What began as a demonstration project of the Vera Institute of Justice in the 1970s to address employment barriers facing the formerly incarcerated following release in New York City has grown into the leading reentry employment organization in the country, where over 25,000 formerly incarcerated individuals have secured full-time employment since 1996. Since 2009, CEO has gained support to expand its programs through government, nonprofit, and private organizations including the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation, the Ballmer Group, and the Irvine Foundation. In 2016, CEO embarked on a 5-year strategic plan to grow to serve 9,000 participants annually.

The Nitty Gritty

The responsibilities of the Business Development Associate support the development and the execution of strategies for growing CEO’s work crews, which will include but are not limited to:

  • Contributing to the team’s efforts to grow CEO’s work crew operation
  • Developing and ensuring on-time delivery of high-quality bids, proposals and reports
  • Drafting, assembling, and submitting responses to government and private companies for bids and requests for proposals (RFPs) for contracts for CEO’s work crews
  • Assisting with the administration and licensing associated with CEO’s business development activities
  • Researching prospects (government agencies and private companies) in select jurisdictions (local and state)
  • Tracking all business development related activities using Salesforce
  • Drafting and distributing proposals, concept papers, slide decks, and fact sheets as needed
  • Coordinating expansion-related travel

Must Haves:

  • You come to CEO with experience in consulting, strategy, technical writing or strategic communications, or business development and are eager to apply your experience and skill set to drive results within a mission-driven, social justice-minded nonprofit organization
  • You’re able to coordinate multiple moving pieces and maintain an efficient workflow by anticipating setbacks and adjusting course when needed
  • You’re highly detailed and organized and can manage multiple priorities and keep detailed records at once and while under pressure
  • You’re a strong project manager with the ability to maintain oversight of all of the details as you coordinate many moving pieces and projects under competing timelines
  • You have excellent time management and follow-up skills
  • You’re a strong researcher and are skilled in quickly producing written content based on your findings
  • Experience with drafting and developing bids and proposals (experience with government bids and grants highly valued)
  • You’re very comfortable with technology, including Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and SalesForce
