State Voices Florida (SVFL) is a state-based collaboration of nonpartisan civic engagement organizations in Florida. SVFL’s nonpartisan mission is to engage historically underrepresented communities in the democratic process. State Voices Florida provides our network with alignment and coordination, data and research capacity, as well as different levels of support to increase the ability of the nonprofit progressive community to create change. This drives our mission to build the sustainable coalition that is going to be needed to tackle the systemic challenges that inhibit historically disenfranchised communities. State Voices Florida is the Florida affiliate of State Voices. State Voices Florida is a fiscally sponsored project of the Tides Center.

Position Summary

The Deputy State Director is responsible for overseeing and implementing the day-to-day mission of State Voices Florida. Through effective collaboration with the Executive Director, SVFL employees, table members, and the State Voices national staff, the Deputy State Director is responsible for developing a coordinated program plan, innovating and evaluating best practices, engaging new partners to participate, managing staff and contractors day-to-day, and overseeing the provision of resources and technical assistance for table partner organizations. This is a regular, full-time position that is exempt from overtime.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Oversee Table’s administrative and management needs

  • Supervise Table staff day-to-day
  • Collaborate with State Voices Florida’s Executive Director on reporting and planning, national convenings and monthly calls, and overall operations, etc.

Develop and maintain partner participation and strengthen collaborative relationships with State Voices Florida (“the Table”)

  • Keep partners informed of Table undertakings, organize and facilitate partner meetings, hold partners accountable for fulfilling their commitments to the Table, encourage participation in all Table activities, build relationships between partners, facilitate collective decision-making processes, and foster the growth of the Table. 

Oversee statewide coordination of partners’ civic engagement efforts

  • Develop strategic plans for Table’s electoral and issue campaigns in collaboration with partners, track partners’ goals and progress, produce voter education materials for partners, support collaboration between partners, provide technical assistance and support to partners, and collaborate with leaders of Table-supported campaigns and allies. 

Provide analysis and strategic guidance

  • Analyze voter registration and voting trends of the New American Majority, as well as the demographic and policy environment, and help coordinate the development of the Table’s electoral and issue campaign strategies in light of this analysis. 

Coordinate and deliver one-on-one and collective training for partners. 

  • Topics include development of individual field plans and strategies; voter targeting; leadership development and organization building; utilizing best practices for civic engagement; message development and delivery; and data-driven civic engagement using the VAN database and other data tools. 
  • Other duties as assigned, this list may not be comprehensive.

Education & Experience

The ideal candidate for this position will possess:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
  • 4-6 years past field program management, staff supervision and management, and an understanding of Florida’s legislative and electoral process. 
  • An understanding of common direct voter contact programs and at least three years’ experience in labor, political, or community organizing and political campaigns.
  • Experience using VAN for organizing and political outreach

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

The ideal candidate will possess many, if not all, of the following qualifications:

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of Florida’s political and policy landscape. 
  • Ability to manage a 501(c)(3) while maintaining legal compliance.
  • A strong commitment to racial equity and social justice
  • A strong commitment to the civic engagement of historically underrepresented communities. 

Skills:

  • Proficiency in Google Suites, VAN, and social media. 

Abilities: 

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills in person, on the phone, and in writing.
  • A demonstrated ability to negotiate, build consensus, and strategically disagree. 
  • Ability to attract, develop, and retain outstanding staff, volunteers, and supporters. 
  • Experience and skill in building and managing coalitions, including facilitating group processes, engaging organizations, and strengthening collaborative efforts. 
  • Ability to manage several tasks/projects concurrently and prioritize work effectively in order to meet deadlines. 
  • Diplomatic, professional approach to problem solving. Experience and skill in training, technical assistance, and leadership development. 
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills; detail oriented. 
  • Ability to work independently and be a self-starter; willing to work sometimes long, irregular hours and to travel as needed.
