About A Better Balance

Mission and Vision

Our mission is to promote equality and expand choices for men and women at all income levels so they may care for their families without sacrificing their economic security. We employ a range of legal strategies to promote flexible workplace policies, end discrimination against caregivers and value the work of caring for families.

History

The founders of A Better Balance are a group of lawyers who successfully worked together on a variety of women’s rights and economic issues and recognized that, in order to assure women’s economic progress, we needed to change the American workplace to allow women (and men) to both work and care for their families. When we started A Better Balance in 2005, much had been written about the barriers facing those struggling to balance the demands of work and home, but the conversation focused largely on these barriers as individual challenges, not systemic problems requiring public solutions. No legal advocacy organization focused exclusively on the problem, and there was little recognition that low-income workers were particularly disadvantaged in their efforts to provide care to children and other family members while earning enough to get by. Since our founding, we have worked to improve the lives of workers, disproportionately women, facing the impossible choice of sacrificing their economic security or sacrificing critical time needed to care for family. We aim to make our society more equitable for women and their families by promoting and supporting policies that allow parents, especially women, to remain in the workforce without compromising the wellbeing of their families.

The Problem

The American workplace and U.S. public policies have failed to keep up with the changing workforce and the changing needs of families. Low-income workers are particularly hampered in their efforts to provide care to children and other family members while earning enough to get by. Many workers are left with the impossible choice of sacrificing their economic security or sacrificing critical time needed to care for family members. ABB is dedicated to solutions to these problems. We are committed to addressing these issues across class lines and with emphasis on particular groups most significantly affected by the failure of American policies.

A Better Balance Solutions

Legislate, Educate, Enforce.  Our overall goal is to keep women connected to the workforce, saving them from being pushed out because they become pregnant, need to take time to care for a new child, or have responsibilities for family members.

Work in states and localities.  We have focused our efforts in states and localities because they are the engines of change for work/family reforms, which drive demand for national solutions. ABB’s legal expertise and coordination across far-flung campaigns is critical to ensure that local victories are successful and contribute to, rather than detract from, the larger movement.

Importance of well-crafted laws and policies.  Our greatest strength is our extremely strong and experienced legal staff. It is essential that the laws we help to enact be expertly crafted to address the problems they seek to address and able to withstand challenges from those who oppose expansion of rights for workers and women. Coalitions throughout the country turn to us for that legal help, confident in our unique expertise.

Work with partners.  We have strong relationships with labor, public health groups, reproductive health groups, worker centers, low-income women’s groups, and with community groups both in New York and around the country. Those groups look to us for help in crafting laws as discussed above.

Empower women to understand their rights and enforce them.  We believe strongly in public education not only as a powerful tool to ensure enforcement of the laws we enact but also as a way to empower women to become advocates for themselves and others. We are extremely proud of how our clients have become spokespeople for policy change.
