Description

Position Summary and General Responsibilities

The Community Literacy Specialist (CLS) will deliver classroom- and community-based educational programming focused on giving parents and educators the tools they need to support young children’s learning at home and in the classroom. The CLS is responsible for delivering StoryCycles®, Tandem’s school-to-home book circulation program, as well as Early Learning Everywhere, Tandem’s community-facing program. Early Learning Everywhere delivers services to families with children who are not enrolled in formal preschool or child care and provides training opportunities to family support professionals and community members seeking to embed early learning strategies within their work so that families encounter early learning support wherever they go.  The CLS will support parents, caregivers, and community members to become leaders in early learning and family engagement in high need communities where children are at risk of not entering school ready. 


The CLS will be the face of Tandem in the community, and as such, must be an effective communicator, and approach partnership opportunities with an entrepreneurial spirit and strategic acumen.


Essential Duties


StoryCycles Program Implementation

Site Management - Support a select caseload of classrooms

  • Coordinate and support program implementation with educators & administrators
  • Keep track of individual site performance using established tools
  • Ensure quality program implementation and maintain relationships with educators through technical assistance visits and interactive Read Aloud demonstrations
  • Develop resources to support high-quality program implementation
  • Participate in inventory management, and the ordering and delivery of books and program materials


Workshops & Training

  • Coordinate and facilitate workshops for families and educators in English and Cantonese
  • Remain informed about current research and professional development surrounding early childhood literacy, learning, and development
  • Participate in development of workshop content, print material, and literacy activities
  • Support with translation of workshop materials and resources from English to Chinese


Book Vetting and Ordering

  • Maintain existing relationships and build new relationships with vendors of high quality Chinese-language books
  • Vet children’s books in Chinese and English according to Tandem’s standards of quality


Early Learning Everywhere

Partner relationship management

  • Source and develop strategic relationships with community partners to extend the reach of Tandem’s programming and bolster Tandem’s reputation as a leader in the fields of early childhood education and family support.
  • Strategically work to align program elements with early learning and family engagement priorities at the agency and community level


Event Coordination and Facilitation

  • Develop and provide training for families, educators and family support professionals in the community in English and Chinese
  • Develop and manage work plans, timelines and budgets for community based events
  • Support recruitment and training of event volunteers
  • Participate in speaking engagements for fundraising purposes, as needed


 General Program Sustainability Support

Communications

  • Participate in event promotion
  • Write and translate content for Tandem’s newsletter, website, and social media platforms
  • Record photo and video at events for use in documentation, staff training, and program promotion

 

Program data tracking, evaluation, and reporting

  • Enter data on service delivery on a daily basis to Salesforce
  • Document communication with partners and prospective partners in Salesforce
  • Administer evaluation tools (surveys and focus groups) and use data to inform service delivery
  • Participate in survey distribution, collection, and data entry
  • Contribute to grant proposals and reports, as needed
  • Ensure that all site-specific contractual obligations and reporting requirements are met within specified timeframes


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Fluency in spoken Cantonese and English
  • Sound knowledge of literacy development; familiarity with principles and practices of adult learning and early childhood education
  • Stellar facilitation skills with the ability to convey information effectively to diverse audiences
  • Ability to apply critical thinking and sound judgment in carrying out program and management tasks while working independently under minimal direction
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with sensitivity and nuance with people across many ages, cultures, literacy levels, etc.
  • A team player who is cooperative, reliable, has a positive attitude and communicates constructively
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills, with the ability to make adjustments to convey information effectively to diverse audiences
  • Proficiency in MS-Office Suite tools required, familiarity with Salesforce preferred
  • Ability to develop and use collaborative relationships to facilitate the accomplishment of work goals
  • Commitment to Tandem’s goals and values
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks or projects while paying sufficient attention to details, even in the presence of distractions or changing work conditions
  • A valid California Driver License, satisfactory driving record, and access to an insured vehicle for use on the job
  • Immunizations - This role requires proof of immunity to Measles and Pertussis as well as annual flu vaccinations and TB tests every 4 years.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficiency in reading and writing Chinese strongly preferred
  • Fluency in spoken Mandarin a plus!
  • Bachelor’s degree and/or teaching or professional training experience preferred


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position requires the ability to regularly sit for long periods, use a computer to create and update documents frequently; operate a motor vehicle and navigate roads; and lift and carry up to 35 pounds.

$22 - $24 per hour DOE, part-time, exempt, salaried, 20-30 hrs per week. Benefits package includes: medical, vision & dental insurance, retirement plan, vacation and sick leave.
