St. Nicks Alliance (SNA) is a nonprofit, nonsectarian community-based organization founded in 1975 with the mission to transform lives through employment, education, housing and health care, delivering impactful services to children, adults and the elderly with the help of our strategic partners. Each year, SNA’s Youth and Education Division helps transform the lives of thousands of North Brooklyn children and youth, ages 2-24, through extensive afterschool, summer and teen programs. Together, we provide a pipeline of services that promote socio-emotional development, creativity, academic success and post-secondary readiness.
Among our chief educational initiatives is SNA’s unique Literacy Immersion Model, which combines multi-faceted literacy immersion, traditional youth development and intensive services for the most struggling youth. The Senior Education Manager plays a critical role in realizing Literacy Immersion by overseeing several key aspects of the model, and providing general support. The Senior Education Manager role is to connect all of the immersive pieces of SNA’s literacy immersion model: Arts Education, Family Literacy, Literacy Development and Initiatives, and Peer Mentorship. The Senior Education Manager oversees BK Story Voyager facilitator, Elementary and Middle School Curriculum Writers, Bus Drivers and Maintenance Coordinator.
The Senior Education Manager provides general support with the planning and implementation of Literacy Immersion, including but not limited to: curriculum development for Interdisciplinary Thematic Units, professional development, evaluation/data analysis, ordering curriculum materials and scheduling BKSV visits to program sites. The Senior Education Manager partners closely with the Associate Director of Education, curriculum developers as well as classroom teachers and site directors to fully realize the Literacy Immersion Model.
Essential Job Functions:
- Coordinate and develop a plan for Literacy Immersion across all disciples: in-classroom literacy, family literacy, STEM, peer mentorship, and arts education
- Focus on the immersive aspect of Literacy Immersion to ensure that all disciples of Literacy Immersion are being met to fruition, elementary and middle school
- Review any curriculum related to the BK Story Voyager
- Create rotating schedule for the BKSV to visit all elementary school sites
- Create a standard for curriculum alignment to use across the education department, elementary to middle school
- Create and support implementation of program evaluation tools in literacy immersion
- Order and facilitate the book selection process for Literacy and Family Literacy curriculums that are connected to a thematic unit
- Lead the Skills Section during the bi-monthly staff training for Group Leaders in Literacy
- Coordinate meetings and support for Literacy Coaches engaged in RTI
- Support and standardize the use of ETO among Literacy Coaches
- Lead the bi-monthly Literacy trainings alongside the Literacy Curriculum Consultant, be prepared to facilitate second trainings for site specific training
- Support sites in thematic unit showcases
- Work in conjunction with the Associate Directors, Deputy Director and Program Directors to establish thematic units and the different goals of the education department
- Communicate with site directors around scheduling of literacy and provide all literacy materials post bi monthly literacy trainings
- With a team write and develop Family Literacy curriculum
- Develop and identify sites to take on Peer Mentorship; Senior Education Manager is in charge of implementing a strong Peer Mentorship program with the assistance of site directors
- Write monthly book review for Greenline
- Lead initiatives in creating systems that set a standard for the Education team
- Develop the on-boarding system for new hires
- Verify the compliance of all Teaching Artists and that they maintain the Teaching Artist policy; maintain a roster of accountability in terms of deadlines and lesson planning
- Maintain a pacing calendar for all literacy immersion pieces; create a timeline of events for in class Literacy, Arts education, and Family Literacy
- Manage the interview process for any new hires in the Education department
- Develop and assist with curriculum planning to ensure that pacing is on track
- Set guidelines and a rubric for lesson review and implementation
- Create an observation tool that can be used to assess educators and artists
- Participate in team meetings, training programs, conferences and forums
- Document all observations that are done by the Curriculum Consultant, and Senior Manager of Education
- Oversight of materials ordering for Teaching Artists and Literacy Specialists; all supplies that are needed to successfully produce literacy
- Create a system to collect program products, completed art works, samples and photos across the Education Department
Coaching: 1:1 Support:
- Coach and support Literacy Specialists to meet literacy goals
- Manage the Literacy Specialist schedule and Friday PD schedule
- Observe Literacy Specialists and Literacy Leaders to ensure that they are meeting the goals of the thematic unit
- Develop a regular schedule to observe literacy across all of the sites; have a rubric for observation
- Offer support to Literacy Leaders as they instruct and manage the classroom of students
- Work closely with educators to ensure that they are receiving support in their curriculum development; offer 1:1 support to develop curriculum with educators
- Lead site specific literacy trainings as needed
- Work with the Literacy Coaches to ensure sites are meeting Literacy standards
- Use creative and innovative problem solving techniques to further develop all SNA Literacy Immersion programming
- Oversee community outreach efforts, including providing the BKSV and the “arts” at events.
- Identify, initiate and deepen relationships with a wide variety of constituencies and community stakeholders
- In partnership with the Associate Directors, Deputy Directors and Program Directors, apply partnership evaluation template to prospective partners (contractors) to determine relevance and suitability of potential new partnerships as they pertain to the literacy immersion model
- Participate in team meetings, training programs, conferences and forums that pertain to Literacy
Essential Core Competencies: Creativity, Relationship Building, Self-Motivation, Planning and Organizing, Problem Solving, Autonomy
- Master’s degree in Education with strong understanding of elementary education and literacy development
- Demonstrated teaching, facilitation, data analysis and curriculum development skills; Facility with Understanding by Design a big plus
- Experience working successfully with elementary age students, including ELLs and SWDs
- Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including Youth and Education team, the public and external partners
- Strong command over English in writing, reading, and speaking. Spanish/ English bilingual preferred.
- Computer literate, Microsoft Suite and Google Suite, online databases, and internal catalogue system. Ability to regularly operate, maximize student learning with computers, databases, tablets, e-readers, computers, and book carts
- Ability to lift and carry 10-25 lbs and push and pull objects weighing 10-25 lbs.
