About FoodWhat: 


“Food,What?!” is a youth empowerment and food justice organization. At FoodWhat, youth engage in relationships with land, food and each other in ways that are grounded in love and rooted in justice. We provide meaningful space where youth define and cultivate their empowerment, liberation and wellbeing. Youth from Watsonville to Santa Cruz join the FoodWhat Crew through our Spring Internship, Summer Job Training and Fall Project Management programs. FoodWhat youth use organic farming, nourishing food and loving community as vehicles to grow on their own terms and in lasting ways. As a FoodWhat Crew, we grow, cook, eat and distribute fresh, healthy food while also addressing local food justice issues. Position Description: 


The Director of Development and Communications is a highly skilled nonprofit fundraiser who also believes deeply in our mission of love, justice, and liberation. This position will be responsible for fundraising our organizational budget and put forward our communications to our community. Development at FoodWhat centers, and arises from, current and projected programming and overall organizational goals.

FoodWhat is aspiring toward a tri-directorship with a horizontal power structure between the Director of Strategy, Director of Programs, and Director of Development and Communications for 2023.  


Development (70%)


Essential Job Functions:

  • Create and implement the annual development strategy and plan for FoodWhat, including individual donors, foundation grants, governmental funds, and corporate giving. This will include prospecting, grant and report writing, campaign design, direct mailing, and relationship building. You will collaborate closely with the Director of Strategy.
  • Coordinate our annual FoodWhat Benefit Dinner and other donor cultivation events.
  • Manage the production of our Annual Report.
  • Maintain FoodWhat’s donation and grant intake process, including managing FoodWhat’s donor database and coordinating our donor/funder gratitude system.  
  • Consult the Director of Strategic Growth on the development of the organizational budget.
  • Work with the Finance Manager to ensure accurate processing of donations, contract payments, invoices, deposits and bills.
  • Maintain files related to donors and funders 
  • Manage general office needs, including procuring office supplies. 


Additional activities:

  • Partner closely with the Director of Strategy to ensure strong overall organizational strategic planning. 
  • Partner closely with the Director of Programs to ensure programming is being supported and we are in alignment with funding obligations. 

 

Communications (20%)


Essential Job Functions:

  • Lead in-house production of FoodWhat’s marketing materials.
  • Create and implement our communications plan.
  • Create our monthly newsletter, known as the Photo of the Month.
  • Manage and update FoodWhat’s website regularly.
  • Partner closely with staff to co-create FoodWhat’s social media presence.
  • Represent FoodWhat in community events and networks as needed.


Additional Activities:

  • Ongoing revision and updating of organizational messaging.

 

Organizational Development (10%)

  • Work with Director of Programs and Director of Strategy to facilitate and operationalize strategic organizational decision making. 
  • Serve as a member of FoodWhat’s tri-directorship (2023), attending weekly meetings and collaborating on organizational-level leadership and management activities.


Qualifications:


  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising.
  • Experience fundraising for organizations with $750,000 budgets and above.
  • Proven success in developing diverse revenue streams for nonprofits.
  • Passion for development and relationship building.

 

Preferred: 


  • Analysis of systems of power, privilege and oppression.
  • Experience with donor information systems.
  • Rooted in local communities of Watsonville and/or Santa Cruz.
  • Experience working with low-income youth.
  • Understanding of and commitment to social justice.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Dependable with thorough follow through.
  • High level of attention to detail.
  • Strong computer skills, including communications design programs such as Canva, website platforms such as SquareSpace, mass email programs such as MailChimp, donor databases such as Bloomerang, and Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite.


Position details: 

This is a 40-hour per week, full time position with paid vacation, sick time, and holidays. Full medical, dental, vision, and retirement benefits provided. Salary commensurate with experience within the $90,000-$95,000 starting range.
