ABOUT THE SIKH COALITION:  

For 20 years, the Sikh Coalition, a national community-based organization, has defended Sikh civil liberties in the courtroom, classroom, community, and halls of Congress. Whether it’s working to secure safer schools, prevent hate and discrimination, create equal employment opportunities, or empower local Sikh communities, the Sikh Coalition’s goal is working towards a world where Sikhs, and other religious minorities in America, may freely practice their faith without bias and discrimination. 


The Sikh Coalition is a nonpartisan, civil rights nonprofit with nearly 20 full-time staff and over one hundred volunteers that operates on a $2.4+ million budget with complete financial transparency. Our funding comes from grants, private foundations, and individual donors. We receive no funding from any government agencies.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Operations Manager will oversee the organization’s finances to ensure fiscal responsibility and compliance is met, provide overall operations support, manage human resources, further develop the technology infrastructure, support recruitment efforts, continue to develop board engagement, as well as provide support as needed to special projects and events. 

 

The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent strategic thinking, can multitask efficiently, has meticulous attention to detail, can identify and solve challenges quickly, has an unwavering commitment to the Sikh Coalition’s vision and values, and exemplifies the Sikh Coalition’s commitment to serving as a catalyst for positive change. The position will be based preferably out of New York, but remote candidates will also be considered. 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

 

A. Financial Management

  • Oversee budget and forecasting, with an eye towards identifying opportunities to streamline costs and financial challenges. 
  • Responsible for monthly reconciliations, financial reporting, invoice payments and reimbursements.
  • Draft materials and metrics for the executive team and board of directors.
  • Coordinate annual audit and prepare government filings to ensure compliance.
  • Work with the development team to reconcile income, track restricted funding and prepare financial documents for project funders.

 

B. Human Resources

  • Manages employee recruitment, review of job descriptions, new hire onboarding, compliance with all state and federal labor laws, performance review process and offboarding.
  • Responsible for payroll and benefits, including 403b processing.
  • Manage Summer Internship program and short-term volunteers.
  • Conduct annual Personnel Policy review and suggest updates as needed.
  • Organize bi-annual staff retreats, weekly staff meetings and team building activities.
  • Continue to maintain and evolve the work culture at the organization.

 

C. Technology and Facilities Management

  • Identify and implement systems to ensure the team has the necessary technology in place to efficiently and effectively function.
  • Manage office equipment, relationships with technology vendors and troubleshoot basic technical issues.
  • Liaise with the building staff to address any issues surrounding office space, manage lease negotiations, office moves and facilities. 

 

D. Board Management

  • Prepare board meeting decks highlighting the current work and progress of the organization, including financial snapshot.
  • Periodically check in with board members to gather their insights and feedback. 
  • Provide support to board of directors and programmatic advisory committees.

E. Special Initiatives

  • Play a pivotal role in bringing to fruition and further developing special initiatives, including the Sikh Project art exhibition. 
  • Assist and support research, vendor management, community engagement and event coordination on a as needed basis. 
  • Plan and provide support for high profile fundraising and programmatic events.
  • Support fundraising campaigns on as needed basis. 
  • Represent the Sikh Coalition at conferences, meetings, and other occasions as needed.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

A. Preferred Work Experience and Key Skills

  • Bachelor's degree required. 
  • Previous non-profit and/or operations experience highly preferred.
  • Meticulous attention to detail, resourcefulness, and ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Flexible self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit who thrives in a fast-moving environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent project management and process development skills.
  • Technologically savvy, with an ability to identify challenges, research solutions, and improve systems to increase organizational efficiency.
  • Experience with bookkeeping and financial reporting, including familiarity with Quickbooks, preferred.
  • Fluency in Punjabi is preferred.

This is a full-time, exempt salaried position and compensation will commensurate with experience. Benefits include:
