New American Leaders (NAL) is leading a movement for inclusive democracy by preparing first and second generation Americans to use their power and potential in public office. Headquartered in New York, NAL is a national, nonprofit organization. We have a strong track record of recruiting and training New Americans of diverse race/ethnic backgrounds to run for public office. We also work with New American elected officials across the country who are at the frontline of creating transformative policy environments for educational, economic and political equity. 


The Director of Communications will use their experience and skills to advance the visibility and following of the organization, as well as the program agenda, through communication strategies that will inform, educate and garner support on behalf of the organization. Responsibilities include overseeing press relations and opportunities, all written and spoken output around advocacy campaigns and events, and supervising digital communications.


NAL has grown significantly in the past 24 months, and the Director of Communications will need to work within a dynamic structure and with a talented and committed team located across the country. We are seeking an experienced strategic thinker who is mission-driven and whose values align with our organization.


Responsibilities


  • Issue area positions, including providing counsel on appropriate messaging and communication vehicles
  • Establish and implement short and long range departmental goals, objectives, policies and operating procedures; monitor and evaluate program effectiveness, enact changes required for improvement
  • Manage the organization's external and internal communications, including op-eds and statements
  • Manage media relations activities including oversight of press releases and statements, cultivating relationships with press (print/television/radio), providing media training to staff as needed, and organizing press briefings/events
  • Supervise Digital Communications Manager to ensure digital communications (e.g., social media, eblasts, livestream, website, blog) are consistent and on message
  • Evaluate Communication department staffing needs; identify, cultivate and recruit new members of the communications team, as appropriate
  • Develop relevant talking points as needed for President’s speaking engagements or interviews
  • Work with development and program staff to identify metrics and stories needed to strengthen communications and fundraising
  • Develop plan to leverage different voices i.e. millennial, state-based topics of interest, national scope
  • Coordinate evaluations and assessments of external communications activities in order to determine the effectiveness of the organization’s marketing and communications plans and strategies
  • Recommend opportunities to leverage NAL positions and overall brand around issue advocacy
  • Work with key partners and identify strategic partnerships that further NAL organizational goals
  • Ensure consistency of message, look, and feel of all communications
  • Support fundraising efforts


Required Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Ability

  • Minimum 5­ years of experience in press, communications or media, including at least two years overseeing strategy for mission-driven nonprofit or political organization
  • Commitment to build relationships with reporters and editors
  • Demonstrated persuasive and refined writing skills
  • Track record as a problem solver and ability to pivot as needed
  • Familiarity with important New American issues and politics
  • Effective, team-oriented leader and manager; ability to develop and motivate staff
  • Broad understanding of digital tools
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to thrive in a fast­-paced and fluid environment
  • Ability to function as part of a team
  • Passion for serving immigrant communities and building a multiracial democracy
  • Ability to exercise a high level of judgment
