About Us: 

Row New York (RNY) is a non-profit organization founded on the premise that the values instilled through rowing, paired with academic support, provide a strong foundation for success in college and beyond. Our core rowing program serves high school student-athletes from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds with a high dosage, year-round rowing and academic and personal development program. 

We serve student-athletes at two sites (Queens and Manhattan) and will be growing to 350 athletes over the next three years. We provide excellent resources for our youth (such as academic enrichment, mentoring, and social work support) so that we are able to support their holistic development and help them meet challenges off the water as well as on. Position Summary:

A Senior Coach manages and runs the activities of high school student athletes under the supervision and guidance of the Head Coach. The Senior Coach is responsible for a team of up to 20 student athletes and assists with the supervision of part-time assistant coaches. 

An excellent candidate has at least three years of rowing experience (high school, club or collegiate), has coached rowing and has experience working with diverse populations. The candidate will be inspired by and capable of developing the potential of every rower. The Queens teams serve girls and gender non-conforming youth. Manhattan teams are co-ed.

This position is at our Manhattan rowing site located in Washington Heights in Upper Manhattan.

Key Responsibilities:

• Leadership and Supervision
• Assist in supervising part-time assistant coaches with consistent, helpful feedback
• Assist or lead professional learning experiences for coaches as appropriate
• Support a positive boathouse culture for youth and staff

• Youth Rowing
• Assist the Head Coach in building a culture that supports youth development and performance on and off the water 
• Assure all aspects of rowing safety (on-water and within/around the boathouse)
• Teach rowers technique, competition, and teamwork
• Coordinate swim lessons and swim tests
• Ensure timely collection and tracking of all participant data
• Work collaboratively with social work and academic staff, as well as parents 
• Regularly communicate with and support participants outside of practice 
• Engage in new participant recruitment and outreach

• Boathouse Operations
• Assist with minor repairs, rigging and general boathouse maintenance
• Assist in the preparations and logistics for scrimmages and regattas

Qualifications:

• Minimum of 3 years of rowing experience and a demonstrated passion for the sport
• Minimum 1.5 years coaching rowing (youth or collegiate rowing) or 3-4 years competitive collegiate rowing experience
• Experience supervising or training staff strongly preferred
• An understanding of positive youth development principles
• Ability to provide an inclusive, and equitable experience for all youth and staff
• Ability to communicate directly as well as provide and receive candid feedback 
• Proactive problem-solver who demonstrates initiative and strong organizational skills
• Understanding of boathouse operations and rowing equipment
• Must be available to work evenings and Saturdays as well as some holidays
• Clean driver’s license, experience driving a 12-15 passenger van and/or shell trailer, preferred
