Job Summary

Mount Sinai Health System seeks a Director of Development, Cancer who will be primarily responsible for directing, coordinating, and executing the strategic planning for development initiatives around cancer in a manner aligned with the goals of Mount Sinai. Accordingly, s/he also serves as a liaison to Mount Sinai’s departmental staff, overseeing the smooth and appropriate implementation of operational strategies within the overall mission. The successful candidate will articulate Mount Sinai’s missions with genuine passion, in the context of a strategic vision that compels the interest and support required to achieve critical funding milestones. He/she will help build philanthropy for the programmatic and research funding priorities of the Tisch Cancer Institute and the ambulatory Cancer Centers of the MSHS. The DOD will report to the Senior Director of Development, Cancer. 

Duties and Responsibilities

The DOD will serve as a fundraiser for the Tisch Cancer Center, and will also provide leadership for all campaign, major gifts, and related development program priorities, working in concert with the Medical Center’s executive team, leaders on the Board, and Leadership Councils for Cancer programs:

  • Performs duties of a principal gift fundraiser, including cultivating donor relationships, soliciting gifts, and ensuring timely and personalized stewardship. He/She will work to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors capable of making transformative contributions to the Tisch Cancer Institute.
  • Works with fundraising staff and volunteers to build and maintain momentum and focus for all who are engaged in fundraising efforts.
  • Develops relationships with an ever-expanding network of faculty and volunteer philanthropic partners.
  • Ensures that staff are properly hired, trained, supported and guided, and that their professional development is nurtured.
  • Creates a positive work environment that promotes collaboration, innovation and teamwork.
  • Works with the Leadership Councils, Medical Center and respective staff to establish accountability standards and systems that track cancer programs’ effectiveness and impact.
  • Annually evaluates staff and provides necessary action to ensure effective and efficient outcomes.
  • Oversees annual budget, budgetary planning, and fiscal management.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s degree required, Advanced degree preferred

Minimum Related Experience

  • Minimum of seven years’ experience in managing comprehensive fundraising for large, complex not-for-profit organizations.  Experience in an academic, research, or hospital/health care environment is preferred.
  • Hands-on, big-thinking fundraiser with proven experience and success in strategizing and leading the solicitation of six- and seven-figure gifts from very high net worth individuals.

General Skills

  • Comprehensive knowledge of all fundraising approaches, with special expertise and understanding of capital campaigns, grateful patients model, principal and major gifts, and planned giving.
  • Demonstrated staff management capabilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication with both internal and external constituents, including public speaking skill at delivering a compelling and persuasive case for philanthropic support.
  • An engaged and energetic fundraiser who relishes the cultivating, soliciting, and stewardship of donors.
  • A person with vision, who can identify and seize opportunities to advance an organization to a level it hasn’t reached before.
  • A dynamic, “doer” leader with the ability to stimulate, invigorate, and motivate individuals around a cause.
  • A team player with senior management counterparts, possessing collaborative instincts, an inclination to integrate efforts, and a tolerance for ambiguity and uncertainty in a highly complex environment.
  • A person with the presence and extraordinary interpersonal skills to build relationships at all levels around a passion for Mount Sinai’s mission.
