Healthy Air and Water Colorado, fondly referred to as ‘HAWC’, is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting public policies that mitigate climate change and its harmful impacts on Coloradans health and livelihood by uplifting the voices of health professionals who see the health harms on the frontlines. HAWC is a sister organization of Healthier Colorado and while independent from each other in terms of their programs, share resources like staff time and administrative operations.

Position Overview

We are in search of an Advocacy Manager to help identify, recruit, and engage health professionals to take action on climate change. The Advocacy Manager applies a blend of communication and organizing skills to springboard health professionals interested in climate policy into action, and translates policy into accessible content for a variety of audiences. The person filling this position serves as a bridge between HAWC members and HAWC staff.  The Advocacy Manager is a critical position that supports policy campaigns and drives engagement of members to see campaigns successfully across the finish line.

The Advocacy Manager will work in collaboration with the HAWC Director to execute state legislative campaigns and regulatory campaigns. The Advocacy Manager will lead on HAWC’s field engagement in our various campaigns by working with partner organizations and coalitions. They will also have primary responsibility for managing member integration into these campaigns, including preparing them to testify and, in collaboration with the communications team, preparing them for engagement with earned media outlets. 

This individual will report to Healthier Colorado’s Senior Director of Activism and will be part of the HAWC team.

Job Duties

Member Engagement

  • Through phone banking, texting, and 1:1s with members, inform members of policy campaigns, provide regular updates, and share opportunities to engage.
  • Ensure members are prepared and trained for advocacy by meeting individually with members, hosting regular trainings, and providing resource materials.
  • Engage and grow our list of committed spokespeople for each policy campaign using existing methods and coming up with innovative and new approaches.
  • Establish processes and find efficiencies within our CRM to streamline communications to our existing members in collaboration with the Communications Manager.

Activist recruitment 

  • Identify and recruit health professionals to become part of our network through:
  • One-on-ones with health professionals
  • Phone banking and texting health professionals
  • Hosting events or engaging with partner organizations on events, including regular advocacy trainings or health and climate chats
  • Build relationships with relevant health associations and organizations.
  • Engage health professionals identified through digital and online acquisition campaigns.
  • Explore innovative ways to reach more health professionals across the state.
  • In collaboration with our Communications Manager, maximize the way we use our CRM to recruit new health professionals.

Campaign Support

  • Mobilize members to share their story through mediums including 
  • With support from the Communications Manager, assist our members in drafting Letters to the Editor, Editorials, and testimonies.
  • Actively represent HAWC in coalitions
  • Participate in partner meetings
  • Lead on HAWC’s field engagement, identifying ways for our members to contribute to campaign goals 
  • Communicate back to the rest of the HAWC team relevant information and tasks discussed during meetings

Preferred qualifications:

  • At least two years of experience in traditional organizing, online organizing, and/or community outreach.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, simultaneously.
  • Ability to track and execute logistics and details.
  • Familiarity with CRM systems (preferably EveryAction). 
  • Proficiency in written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Experience working with a diverse group of individuals and coalitions.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.

Compensation: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Salary range is $55,000 to $62,000 annually. HAWC and Healthier Colorado’s office environment is relaxed and a culture of accountability which allows for significant workplace flexibility.
