The END Fund is a leading philanthropic investment vehicle with a mission to control or eliminate diseases that affect the world’s poorest people, specifically five of the most prevalent neglected tropical diseases (NTDs): intestinal worms, river blindness, trachoma, schistosomiasis and lymphatic filariasis. In the first five years since the END Fund’s inception (2012-2016), the team mobilized more than $75 million in private investments and supported delivery of over 331 million treatments, training of more than 750,000 health workers, and provision of over 10,000 surgeries for people suffering from these preventable and controllable diseases. In 2017 alone, the END Fund supported partners to provide over 160 million NTD treatments (valued at over $330 million) to more than 90 million people at risk of NTDs in 23 countries. In a short time, the END Fund has thus established a strong track record in private philanthropic giving.
The END Fund accomplishes its mission by:
· Mobilizing and investing resources to where they can have maximum impact;
· Advocating for innovative, integrated and cost-effective NTD programs; and,
· Facilitating private sector engagement to end diseases of poverty.
The END Fund’s strategic programming and priorities are in line with the WHO and global NTD community’s common roadmap to control or eliminate the most common NTDs. The END Fund has a special emphasis on Africa and currently supports NTD programs in 10 strategic priority countries in Africa and an additional 12 to 15 countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. The END Fund is actively seeking to expand its community of visionary and engaged philanthropists, foundations, and corporations committed to treating and preventing the spread of NTDs.
Reporting to the SVP of Programs and working with other staff across the organization, the Program Director (PD) will take primary responsibility for management and oversight of a portfolio of programs. The END Fund works in varying degrees of project involvement with implementing partners and in managing programs. PDs must therefore be competent in monitoring financial expenditure and evaluation of program outcomes, while providing a general (not expert) degree of technical advice on NTD programming, capacity building, and organizational development. The PD is a member of the END Fund’s Programs Team, but will also work with all teams across the organization and contribute especially to the development of fundraising proposals and other external relations opportunities as required.
It is expected that the Program Director will be able to spend 30% of his/her time traveling both domestically and internationally.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
Responsibilities Related to Grant Management
The END Fund strives to be a collaborative partner with its grantees and within the wider NTD community. Our objective is to deliver high-performing NTD programs that meet the test of good practice and add value in the sector. In this respect, the role of the Program Director focuses on:
· Grant and program management of allocated END Fund programs, including but not limited to:
o Ensuring deliverables are met
o Milestones and timeline are adhered to
o Finances are monitored
o Programs comply with good practice and END Fund terms and conditions
· Conducting comprehensive due diligence assessments of potential implementing partners
· Completion of detailed project and program reports
· Representing the END Fund at international meetings and conferences
· Monitoring and evaluation of programs
· Capacity building of implementing partners
· Track broader NTD initiatives and potential private sector engagement in NTDs in the country and region where the END Fund is granting, to ensure coordination and that the END Fund resources are being leveraged to reach our goals of country ownership and sustainability
· Work to build partnerships at the national and local level with other NGOs, government and private sector as appropriate to increase attention, resources and programming for NTD control and elimination efforts
Responsibilities in Developing the END Fund as a Learning Organization
The END Fund views itself as a learning organization and is committed to contributing to thought leadership and reflective practice in the sector. In this respect, the role of the Program Director focuses on:
· Data capture, analysis, interpretation and application
· Contributing to the continued growth of an organization with a focus on impact and results-based decision making
· Maintaining currency within the NTD sector, both generally and in regards to program implementation
· Overseeing the collection of lessons learned within both the programs team and across the organization
· Supporting END Fund’s ongoing outreach efforts and reporting to potential and current investors.
The END Fund takes an integrated approach to organizational deliverables. All staff are expected to embrace different tasks to avoid a siloed structure. In this respect, the role of the Program Director focuses on:
· Engagement with our donors and the wider NTD community
· Providing support to all parts of the organization for activities that advance the END Fund’s mission
· Any other activities as requested by the SVP of Programs
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
· Graduate degree in international development, public health or a relevant discipline
· Experience in international development practice
· Experience in grant making desired
· Strong collaborative team working experience
· Commitment to humanitarian and development goals
· Demonstrated strategic thinking in program design for development
· Grant management experience and ability to manage multi-staged projects from concept to completion
· Ability to develop and monitor complex project budgets
· Understanding of project financing and in planning and managing grant and program budgets
· Ability to craft high-quality written materials
· Ability to translate technical material and distill it into accessible language for non-technical audiences
· Able to function both independently and as a team player
· Detail-oriented and proactive problem-solving skills
· Strong organizational skills, including the ability to coordinate, prioritize, and manage multiple activities
· Self-motivator and the ability to juggle multiple high priority projects in fast-paced environment
· Comfortable and flexible in working with colleagues, clients and partners in various locations and time zones
· Ability to act as a representative of the END Fund to the public
· Excellent analytical skills
· Excellent oral/written communication in English; French fluency strongly preferred
· Competency in Microsoft Excel
