Staff Accountant Job Description

Reports to: Controller

Job Type: Full-time, Exempt, Hybrid

Salary Range: $60,000 to $70,000

EXP helps communities bridge the skills gap needed for employers to connect with the future workforce and youth to be prepared to compete in tomorrow’s workplace.

Position Overview:

The Staff Accountant with EXP is responsible for managing all accounting, financial, and business related activities assigned to them with minimal oversight. These activities include but not limited to AP/ AR, account reconciliations and general ledger accounting etc. The Staff Accountant will work closely with the controller to ensure the accurate and timely preparation and distribution of certain financial and management reports. The applicant should be detail-oriented, possess a high degree of accuracy and work well with other people in a hybrid (office / home) work environment. 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

·        Perform professional level accounting duties according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

·        Participates in finance, business, and accounting related projects and meetings as assigned by the Controller

·        Prepares regular monthly financial reports, fundraising event reports, grant reports, and cash reports etc.

·        Inputs, tracks, monitors, and reconciles expenses and income receipts and ensures proper expense allocation of all transactions for budget to actual reports

·        Work collaboratively with Development and Program Departments to reconcile and report gift and contract revenues

·        Responsible as directed by the controller for the maintenance of the chart of accounts, inputting accurate entries into the general ledger, AP, and AR modules, as well as donations, fixed assets, and allocation of administrative overhead expenses

·        Maintain fixed assets, depreciation schedules, and research and correct discrepancies

·        Prepare and record accurate payroll journal entries and employee 403b contributions

·        Under the direction of the controller, assists with gathering and preparing schedules for the annual audit and 990 preparation

·        Assist with the creation of detailed reporting and analytical capabilities within QuickBooks and accounting workflow activities as well as assisting with policy and procedure documentation and business processes

·        Oversees that vendor files are up-to-date with current W-9, and oversees the preparation of annual 1099 reports

The Successful candidate should possess:

·        A Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance (required) with 4-7 year’s progressive nonprofit related experience

·        Possess strong current knowledge of principles for non-profit accounting, QuickBooks, and experience with accounting for grants, contracts, budgeting, and payroll services

·        Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects and deadlines while focusing on accuracy, timeliness, and completeness

·        Acute attention to detail, accuracy, and the ability to work with minimal supervision

·        Strong oral and written communication skills

·        Nonprofit industry experience is strongly preferred

·        Strong computer aptitude, proficiency in QuickBooks Premier non-profit, and Microsoft Office including Excel and Word
