Education Manager 

Reports to:        Superintendent of Waterfront & Strategic Initiatives

Hours:                 Full Time; weekend hours required seasonally; occasional overnight and evening hours required. At this time Museum staff is working remotely.

Description:      The Education Manager is devoted to developing and delivering educational and interactive components and lessons to enhance the visitor experience. Responsibilities range from developing lessons for field trips to educational components for new and existing exhibits within the Museum and Historic Ships, as well as managing Education Department staff. This person will help grow educational programming and is a key member in implementing ISM’s strategic plan.

Qualifications:

  • M.A. in education, museum studies, museum education, science, history or related subject preferred
  • At least two years progressive experience in education, museum education or related field
  • Familiarity with NGSS Standards  
  • Experience teaching, developing lesson plans and curriculum aligned with PA state standards
  • Experience in, and comfortable teaching and managing children, youth, and adult groups
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Comfortable and confident in taking the lead on projects and tasks
  • Ability to organize and manage a diverse team in person and remotely
  • Familiarity with developing and implementing hands-on interactive programming
  •  Knowledge of volunteer management.
  • Strong computer skills, including ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Knowledge using 3D printers, a bonus. 
  • Ability to network professionally and effectively represent the Museum to potential visitors, funders, and partner organizations.
  • Self-motivated and proactive in completing own work
  • Patience and strong attention to detail
  • Knowledge of best educational practices as it relates to museum education.

Essential Duties:

  • Responsible for the management and organization of the efforts of the Education Department of Independence Seaport Museum. 
  • Supervises and supports Education department staff in day-to-day responsibilities as well as long term planning.
  • Serves as outreach representative to involve partnerships with community organizations in education projects. This includes attending meetings with community leaders, local school districts, and other similar organizations.
  • Manages and tracks Education Department budget and expenses, including managing inventory of supplies needed for programming.
  • Plan and develop curriculums based on state and local standards for the schools that utilize the Museum including teacher professional development.
  • Oversees all programs for the Education Department with a particular attention to program logistics.
  • Works with Marketing and Communication Departments in promoting educational programs to wide and diverse audiences.
  • Preparation of grant applications for projects relating to education programs in partnership with the Development Department
  • Works cooperatively with other departments in the development of interdisciplinary programming.                 
  • Serves on various committees both internal and external pertaining to programming initiatives of the Museum
  • Supports education programs by providing lessons and overseeing youth programs.
  • Train other staff members to assist with education program support as needed.
  • Assist in developing large-scale museum events
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
