The National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) seeks an experienced Major Gifts & Events Manager to work with NCTE’s Development Director and Development team to manage and implement the organization's major gifts and special events fundraising strategies. The Major Gifts & Events Manager will develop and execute strategies to steward, retain, and upgrade donors within the major gifts and Capital Club portfolios, as well as cultivate new donor relationships. Additionally, the Major Gifts & Events Manager is responsible for conceptualizing and executing special events and related fundraising efforts, including NCTE’s annual signature event, the Trans Equality Awards, and several smaller, donor events. This position will report to and work closely with the Development Director to ensure ample funds are generated to support NCTE’s mission. This position reports to the Development Director, is a remote position that is based within 4 hours of Washington, DC, and has occasional travel.


About NCTE and NCTE Action Fund

The National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) is a strong voice for transgender people in our nation’s capital. NCTE advocates for policy change at federal, state, and local levels and works to increase societal understanding and acceptance of transgender people. NCTE has a serious commitment to approaching and engaging in its work with an awareness of how racial and economic justice is intertwined with transgender justice, and a commitment to ensuring that policymakers and society understand the connection as well.


Launched in 2017, the National Center for Transgender Equality Action Fund (NCTE Action Fund) is a 501(c)(4) non-profit advocacy organization fighting for transgender equality at the local, state, and federal levels, affiliated with NCTE. The two organizations share office space and staff, including this position.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Major Donor and Capital Club Portfolio Management
  • Lead strategy, solicitation and acquisition of major gifts ($5,000 and up) to NCTE and NCTE Action Fund.
  • Build and maintain relationships with Capital Club donors ($1,000 and up) to cultivate major gifts.
  • Prospect potential major donors who could be added to the donor pipeline.
  • Travel to meet with donors as necessary.
  • Events
  • Work with the Development Director and Development Manager to conceptualize special events and related fundraising strategies.
  • Coordinate the logistics and execution of all special events, including NCTE’s annual gala, the Trans Equality Now Awards.
  • Develop an annual small events calendar (approximately 5-10 per year), in partnership with the Development Director.
  • Develop and coordinate event budgets and logistics.
  • Collaborate with the Communications Team to develop and coordinate advertising and collateral material design, production, and distribution.
  • Engage NCTE’s board of directors in event implementation.
  • Relationships
  • Maintain and strengthen relationships with current and prospective major and Capital Club donors, and the general community.
  • Serve as a representative of NCTE, its board, and executive director to engage and solicit donors, prospects, and community.
  • Collaboration
  • Work collaboratively with other departments to strengthen fundraising efforts.


Qualifications: 

  • Experience: At least 3 years of experience as a fundraising professional in a nonprofit organization, working directly with major donors and planning large donor events. Demonstrated experience in managing and implementing a successful, comprehensive major gifts fundraising strategy and preparing work plans to achieve goals. Experience with Raiser’s Edge and Microsoft Office suite is a plus.
  • Track record of success: Demonstrated success in identifying and securing increased funds from current and prospective major donors through a coordinated, strategic approach.
  • Creativity and Innovation: Ability to see opportunities, think creatively, and develop new approaches for development.
  • Self-direction: Track record of taking initiative and working independently. Takes initiative and actively seeks to deepen current donor relationships and to forge new ones. Ability to be self-sufficient in a small staff environment.
  • Communications: Skilled in creating powerful, compelling written and oral communications for fundraising. Strong relationship building and “people” skills.
  • Collaborative Spirit: Ability to work with a team of hard-working, energetic professionals, taking input from a diverse group of colleagues, and exhibiting compassionate communication and project management.
  • Prioritization, Time Management and Detail Orientation: Excellent organizational and time-management skills, detail-oriented, including ability to manage multiple tasks independently. Ability to set and meet goals, prioritize, plan, manage, and complete work on deadlines.
  • Flexibility: Ability to shift one’s work and expectations given the nature of our work and how it can change quickly.
  • Understanding of Transgender Justice: A deep and nuanced understanding of issues affecting transgender people as well as an understanding of how racism, classism and other systems of inter-connected oppressions affect trans people.
  • Understanding of Racial and Economic Justice: A complete understanding of racial and economic justice and systems of interconnected oppressions and how this shapes organizational communication strategies and messages.


Location and Hours:

This position is full-time, 40 hours/week, Monday through Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends. All internal meetings take place between the core hours of 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET, but staff have the flexibility to begin their day earlier (e.g. 8:00 a.m. ET) or end their day later (e.g. 6:30 p.m. ET). NCTE allows for staff to also flex time to maintain a 40-hour work week, in addition to comp time, as appropriate.


The Major Gifts & Events Manager position is remote, but must be located within 4 hours of Washington, DC. This may include the following areas: New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and portions of New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina. Occasional travel will be required. If you are not currently based in the aforementioned region, you must be willing to relocate within three months of the position start date. NCTE offers assistance with relocation expenses.


Salary and Benefits:

The Major Gifts and Events Manager is a full-time, exempt, and union eligible position. For many years, NCTE has maintained high-level benefits and competitive salaries. For this position, the salary range is $60,000-$70,000 with the candidate’s skills and experience determining where they fall in the range. However, for candidates with more than 10 years of experience, salaries above this range may be considered.
