The Data and Business Analyst joins the Information Technology and Business Intelligence (ITBI) Department – a dynamic 3-person team responsible for:

§ Promoting a culture where data enhances decision-making, increases the value of accreditation, and ensures quality services to clients and volunteers.

§ Managing data and communications assets such as a Salesforce database, a public website (, client and volunteer portals, marketing software, survey software, and more.


The Data and Business Analyst position will support the work of the Information Technology and Business Intelligence (ITBI) Department by:

§ Providing accurate and actionable reports and analyses for COA’s clients, volunteers, and staff

§ Assisting in the development of COA’s benchmarking program which will provide vital benchmark data to the nonprofit human services field

§ Interfacing with staff to understand and operationalize COA’s many data streams

§ Contributing to the ongoing evolution of COA’s data strategy and data model


Data Environment

§ Develop a deep understanding of COA’s data model and continually identify improvements

§ Become proficient in COA’s reporting environment, including native Salesforce reporting capabilities and advanced reporting methods

§ Understand the value of, and interactions between, internal data sources:

o  Accreditation process data

o  Client and volunteer demographic and satisfaction data

o  Client performance data

o  Marketing data (such as social media and Google Analytics data)

§ Identify sources of third-party data for integration into COA’s data model

Internal and External Reporting

§ Ensure staff have access to operations data by maintaining and enhancing a suite of internal dashboards

§ Conduct monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting for the entire organization, including predictive analyses of workload and resource needs

§ Meet regularly with all departments to review reports/analyses, communicate their import, and explore system or process enhancements

§ Develop internal department- and organization-level performance measures

§ Design and publish reports to clients and volunteers which transform demographic, performance, and accreditation process data into actionable insights

§ Design and publish public-facing reports to bolster marketing efforts and/or provide valuable information to the human services field

§ Define and maintain schemas for segmenting clients and volunteers

§ Write concise narrative summaries, including recommended actions, for all complex analyses

§ Integrate statistical testing into analyses as appropriate

§ Conduct market research and other analyses using third-party data

Quality Control

§ Lead a data quality assurance program

§ Work with department leads to identify and correct bad data

§ Identify new methods/applications to identify or prevent bad data


§ Develop partnerships with other entities to grow COA’s analytics capabilities, access to data, and ability to provide high-quality accreditation services and assets

§ Seek grants and other funding for special projects




§ BA in Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field

§ Master’s degree preferred


§ Required: 3 years of experience in data reporting, analysis, or evaluation

§ 1-2 years field specific experience (preferably working in a nonprofit as an evaluator/analyst or similar role)

§ Previous experience with database systems and related technology


  • Required: High level of proficiency with Microsoft Excel (Pivot Tables, charts, and advanced formulas like vlookup, index/match, and array formulas)
  • Required: Knowledge of statistical techniques
  • Required: Self-driven desire to improve technical/analytical skills and continually improve understanding of COA’s accreditation process
  • Knowledge of statistical reporting tools (e.g., SPSS, Minitab, Mathematica, etc.)
  • Previous experience with BI tools (e.g. Hadoop, Tableau, Power BI, Google Analytics, etc.)
  • Knowledge of data visualization best practices
  • Capacity to communicate technical knowledge to non-technical audiences
