ABOUT OUTRIGHT ACTION INTERNATIONAL

Founded in 1990, OutRight Action International strives to help lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) people live safer, healthier, and more empowered lives worldwide. Working from its offices in 7 countries and global headquarters in New York City, OutRight documents human rights violations, helps resource LGBTIQ movements and allies, and advocates for the rights of LGBTIQ people. 

OutRight currently seeks a Fellow who will lead and implement its Campaign to End Conversion Practices Globally. (Conversion practices are the violent and discriminatory anti-LGBTIQ actions sometimes known as ‘conversion therapy’.) This is a full- time position for approximately 18 months and can work from anywhere in the world with dependable internet. The position reports to the Director of Law & Policy. While recognizing that the elimination of conversion practices will require diverse strategies, this position focuses primarily on advocacy in law and policy.  

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Campaign globally for restrictions on anti-LGBTIQ conversion practices. OutRight supports law and policy restrictions; condemnations from professional associations; resolutions from international mechanisms, and public messaging from survivors, their families and allies.   
  • While recognizing that the elimination of conversion practices will require diverse strategies, this position focuses primarily on advocacy in law and policy. The Fellow will seek to influence the drafting of law and policy, disseminate best practices from a human rights perspective, support the education of lawmakers, and elevate the experiences of survivors and experts into the harm done by conversion practices to support national work around the world.  
  • Represent OutRight in coalitions and advocacy contexts related to the program.
  • Collaborate with national-level LGBTIQ organizations and allies (i.e. children’s rights groups, progressive religious leaders, anti-torture organizations, women’s rights groups, mental health professional associations, etc.).
  • Produce research and documentation as needed.  
  • Develop project goals and a Monitoring and Evaluation framework towards reaching the objectives, outputs and outcomes.
  • Draft communication materials for and about the program.
  • Support fundraising efforts for the project.
  • Ensure all project objectives are met efficiently, on budget and on time. 
  • Travel as requested by OutRight when the global public health situation permits it.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 3 years of relevant experience 
  • Proven successes contributing to national advocacy campaigns
  • An understanding and passion for LGBTIQ human rights in a global context
  • Proven experience working on sensitive issues with respect for and knowledge about cultural, ethnic and religious diversity 
  • Experience working with grants, i.e., reporting, monitoring and evaluation, and grant compliance  
  • Exceptionally self disciplined and self motivated
  • Able to work alone and remotely
  • Advanced training in a relevant field (preferably Master`s degree or equivalent)
  • Must be willing and able to travel extensively for work.
