Description: The Labor Organizer will engage Latino Union’s base of Latinx and Black day laborer and household worker members in creating safe, living-wage jobs, growing as leaders, and building a larger movement for immigrants and workers rights. Reports to Lead Organizer.

Responsibilities Include:

·      Recruit, build and maintain strong relationships with members

·      Provide wage theft education and trainings to community members, engaging workers with wage theft cases in advocating for changes to improve wage theft collections and other unjust worker conditions.

·      Support workers in filing wage theft claims with the Illinois Department of Labor

·      Organize with members around individual employers to pay workers wages they are owed using direct action and other methods as needed.

·      Train and support members to take on leadership positions within the wage theft program and at Latino Union of Chicago.

·      Support leaders to plan and facilitate health and safety trainings for household workers covering a range of subtopics such as labor rights, negotiating, and the Domestic Bill of Rights.

·      Coordinate with Development Director and members to communicate their work to allies and media.

·      Work with other LU organizers to train members in organizing skills and providing political education opportunities.

·      Support other LU campaigns and coalition efforts.

·      Maintain records of members, campaigns, cases, trainings.

·      Writing up detail records of agenda and activities.

·      Submit monthly organizing reports for grants.

Attend Latino Union’s bi-weekly staff meetings, weekly organizers meetings and other staff retreats and organizational meetings

Support fundraising, communications, and other organizational tasks as needed.

Desired Qualifications:

·      Minimum of 3 years experience with worker/community organizing; day laborers or low-income, workers; or participatory, culturally relevant, community-led programming

·      Ability to work varied hours depending on community needs, including evenings and weekends

·      Drivers license and reliable access to a vehicle

·      Exceptional relationship-builder

·      Familiar with Popular Education methods

·      Experience with direct action preferred

·      Understanding of issues facing low-wage workers, immigrant communities, and other communities of color

·      Passion and commitment to collaborate with diverse stakeholders in a way that prioritizes worker member development and builds organizational capacity

·      Excellent communication and organizational skills—good attention to detail and well organized

·      Self-motivated—proven ability to work independently and collaboratively

·      Experience and competencies in working in a multiracial, multicultural environment

·      Demonstrated leadership qualities and commitment to continual learning and growth within the organization
