Mass Mentoring Partnership AmeriCorps Ambassadors of Mentoring support mentoring across the Commonwealth to improve positive outcomes for youth by building capacity in key program areas such as mentor recruitment, screening, and training. Projects focus on developing new or strengthening current mentoring programming to serve youth ages 7-24.

Mass Mentoring Partnership (MMP) is fueling the movement to expand empowering youth-adult relationships to meet the needs of communities across Massachusetts. MMP serves more than 370 programs statewide, supporting over 30,000 youth in quality relationships.


Host Site Description:

Organization Profile: BUILD’s unique program offers students a four-year entrepreneurship experience designed to reinforce the Common Core and develop 21st Century Skills. We connect our students to a powerful network of mentors who support them as they realize their potential and abilities. BUILD staff work closely with teachers by providing ongoing coaching on the day to day program facilitation. BUILD also provides mentorship from local businesses to support in the classroom. BUILD staff assist with all student events to include the Idea pitch, Funding Pitch, Sales Bazaar and Business Plan Competitions. Position Description:

Research has proven students with mentors perform better in school, are more likely to complete high school and attend college, have increased academic self-efficacy, set higher educational goals, and have more positive attitudes toward school and better school attendance than non-mentored youth. Our mentors are the backbone of our program. They volunteer 90 minutes, once a week during the school year to support our students in creating their own businesses. The person in this role will support the Community Engagement Manager in recruiting, training and supporting these mentors as they work with our youth. This role will ensure potential mentors are a good fit for the program, give mentors real time feedback while working with our students and support our efforts in getting the community more involved in our program.


Our Ambassador will support the following service areas:

● Mentor Recruitment and Marketing utilizing social media, email, and Salesforce

● Providing mentor support , communications and ensuring needs are met

● Assist BUILD staff with mentor training and onboarding ●

Implement innovative programming and events for targeting mentor retention

● Assist BUILD Community Engagement Manager in community engagement and outreach efforts.

Project Responsibilities

● Organize student, mentor, teacher communication via email and Zoom for entrepreneurship-based learning program provided to Boston Public School students.

● Work closely with BUILD Community Engagement Manager to implement innovative programs and recruitment materials for mentors and relationship building workshops for 100+ professionals.

● Coordinate and support the implementation of mentor recruitment, training, and retention strategies while providing ongoing support. Platforms such as gmail, social media, zoom, slack, volunteermatch will be utilized.

● Design, implement, and monitor virtual engagement initiatives via email and social media (newsletters, Mentor Network Linkedin Page, Mentor Spotlight Series)

● Utilize Salesforce & G-Suite to generate reports, develop experience surveys, maintain spreadsheets, and analyze program data to inform community management strategies

● Collaborate with teammates to develop community growth strategies/projects such as launching new mentor website (composing copy, proofing, sourcing virtual resources as needed)

● Track, monitor, and analyze performance of email/ social media campaigns and experience surveys to inform community management strategies

● Assist in promoting virtual events & email/social media campaigns to increase engagement and expand community (BUILDFest, Campus Without Walls, Virtual Design Challenge)

● Support the implementation of mentorship program & e-commerce project by assisting teachers, mentors, students for academic and career development

*Prior to COVID-19, mentoring was an in-person volunteer opportunity; our team is still evaluating whether mentoring will be in-person, hybrid or virtual for the 2021/2022 academic year (as of June 2021)

● Identify opportunities, trends, and features in the youth mentor space for relevant networking, recruitment, training opportunities

● Develop projects on youth mentoring/social equity for AmeriCorps and Wheelock College of Education & Human Development at Boston University

● Attend BUILD trainings and meetings to increase knowledge in youth development field.

● Give on site feedback to mentors working with youth

The Ideal Candidate:

● Passion for working with diverse youth and families

● Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills

● Motivation and aptitude for networking and outreach

● Committed to actively recruiting, selecting, on-boarding and managing mentors

● Ability to plan, execute and document site-based group activities and off-site field trips

● Flexibility, patience, and a good sense of humor

● Ability to work occasional evenings/weekends

● Must be willing to undergo a National Service Criminal History Check, including screenings through the National Sex Offender Public Website, a name-based search of the statewide criminal history registry and a fingerprint based FBI check. *Eligibility to participate in the AAoM program is contingent on the results of this screening

● Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university or transferable life experience

● A passion for volunteerism and community service

● Experience/skill in effective group behavior management preferred

● Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, G-Suite, video conferencing, Social Media platforms


AmeriCorps Service Requirements:

● You must be a U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident alien of the U.S. to be an AmeriCorps member

● Complete a minimum of 1700 hours of documented service to complete host site project

● Complete all required AmeriCorps documentation and monthly reporting

● Complete as a team one community service project to benefit the field of mentoring

● Maintain a service portfolio

● Commute to all corps-wide trainings and events to cultivate future non-profit leaders. (Reimbursements available for qualifying members)

○ Responsibilities include attending pre-orientation session, orientation, monthly corps meetings, a fall and mid-year retreat and two Program Day service planning sessions – Meetings located in Greater Boston

● Effectively manage time, projects, and meet competing demands

● Complete all professional development requirements as part of member contract Program


Qualifications:

● BA/BS strongly preferred or equivalent experience

● Experience with and/or commitment to youth development

● A passion for volunteerism and community service

● The desire to work with diverse people, organizations and communities ●

Strong writing and editing skills

● Some experience with marketing – material design, blogging and social media preferred

● Public speaking

● Interest in nonprofit organizations and their development

● Excellent organization and communication skills

● The ability to work independently and as part of a team

● Proven leadership and project management abilities

● Flexibility, adaptability, and a good sense of humor and a positive attitude
