Description

The Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center (GNOFHAC) seeks an Intake Specialist to manage the organization’s intake process and provide administrative and litigation support.

 

About GNOFHAC: The Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center is a private, non‐profit civil rights organization that was established to eradicate housing discrimination throughout the greater New Orleans area through education, investigation, and civil rights  enforcement activities. GNOFHAC is dedicated to fighting housing discrimination not only because it is illegal, but also because it is a divisive force that perpetuates poverty, segregation, ignorance, fear and hatred.  

 

Education Requirements: Bachelor’s degree, Paralegal Certificate or relevant office experience.    

  

Immediate Supervisors: Legal Director, Director of Finance  

 

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented and highly organized, efficient at office and administrative tasks, able to complete assignments and manage duties on time with minimal oversight. In addition, the ideal candidate should have excellent interpersonal skills, strong writing and reading comprehension ability, excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Adobe Acrobat, and possess strong proofreading and document formatting skills, including the ability to generate tables of contents and tables of authorities. 


Familiarity with electronic case management systems is a plus.  

  

Two years of experience working in an office environment is preferred. A demonstrated commitment to civil rights is essential. Bilingual (Spanish/English) strongly preferred.   

  

Responsibilities: The Intake Specialist/Administrative Assistant’s essential responsibilities will include:  

 

• Assist with the screening of requests for legal assistance, including answering phones, conducting initial client interview and obtaining documents relevant to intake;  


• Serve as first point of contact with community members and potential clients; 


• Prepare office space for daily business operations;

 

• Maintain full and accurate case files; obtaining relevant documents from electronic databases (PACER, Lexis), attorneys, clients, and other sources;  


• Maintain databases and case management software; generating reports as needed for grant reporting and litigation purposes;  


• Compose and prepare correspondence for signature; proofread correspondence, documents and filings;  


• Maintain case calendars, including filing deadlines and other important dates, providing attorneys with advance notice of upcoming deadlines;


• Assist with the preparation of documents; photocopying and assembling documents with attachments for filing and mailing;   


• Perform day-to-day administrative duties including mail receipt and distribution, maintain an inventory of office supplies and ordering as necessary, and provide other support as needed;


• Work under the supervision of the Director of Finance to assist with accounting duties including maintaining the check and cash receipts log, prepare check requests and mail bill payments, and support monthly credit card reconciliations;


• Safeguard clients’ security and confidentiality;


• Work as a team and support the mission and goals of the organization and programs;


• Other duties and special projects as assigned.


Salary: Salary is commensurate with experience within the guidelines of GNOFHAC’s pay scale. Excellent employer-paid benefits, including health benefits, retirement contributions, and a vacation and holiday package.
