Director of Development / Major Gifts Officer, West Coast U.S.

RAICES is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency that promotes justice by providing free and low-cost immigration legal services and education to underserved immigrant children, families and refugees in Texas.  We actively advocate for these individuals and do whatever it takes to assist the immigrant community.

Position Summary:

In Summer 2018, RAICES received an unprecedented level of donor support, and we are looking to hire an enthusiastic, professional gifts officer who can play a key role in building our major gifts program and relationships with donors. The Director of Development / Major Gifts Officer (DoD/MGO) is responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual prospects within a region who have the potential to make a major gift ($25,000+) to support RAICES. The DoD/MGO will work closely with the Chief Development Officer to design and implement a strategic and sustainable plan to grow the organization’s fundraising capacity throughout the West Coast region of the U.S., with a focus on California and major cities in the region.

The candidate must be a collaborative team player who is focused on thoughtfully building and managing both a new fundraising program as well as individual donor relationships. Qualified candidates should possess exemplary writing, communication, and computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite and Google Apps) and be highly organized with the ability to effectively work in a fast-moving environment and use independent judgment. Previous experience will demonstrate a high-level of knowledge and sophisticated understanding of fundraising best practices and a proven track record of closing at least five- and six-figure gifts.

Job Description:

  • Build and manage a strong fundraising portfolio of 150+ current and prospective donors at the $25,000+ level
  • Initiate contact and meet with existing and potential donors;
  • Develop and implement engagement and cultivation strategies for prospects;
  • Solicit gifts of $25,000 and higher from current and prospective donors;
  • Oversee stewardship of a high-quality donor experience through correspondence, donor engagement, professional proposals, mailings, and acknowledgments.
  • Work with the CDO to design a major gift strategy aimed at increasing the overall dollars raised in the West Coast U.S. year-over-year.
  • Work with appropriate Development staff to identify and qualify prospects and build appropriate strategies to capture giving potential.
  • Utilize the RAICES CRM to maintain accurate records of all donor interactions, individuals’ programmatic interests, trends in giving, and strategies for donor engagement and solicitation.
  • Plan and execute unique cultivation event opportunities for major prospects and donors, including lunch and learns, small cultivation dinners, etc.
  • Stay well-informed on immigration news, policies, and public discourse.
  • Other tasks and duties reasonably related to job responsibilities.

Required Qualifications:

  • Meaningful years of fundraising experience in a complex non-profit organization.
  • Significant experience cultivating and soliciting mid-level or major ($10,000+) gifts and/or a strong theoretical understanding of donor engagement and philanthropic gift solicitation.
  • Highly organized with the ability to work effectively in an ambiguous, fast-moving environment.
  • A self-motivated team player with an energetic, flexible and creative approach, strong decision-making ability and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively present information to donors and staff.
  • Sound judgement and sensitivity to highly confidential information.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Apps, and fundraising database systems.
  • Willing to travel as needed for donor meetings and events.
  • Demonstrates the highest level of professional and ethical conduct.
