The Canadian Gap Year Association is a non-profit organization supporting youth choosing to push pause on formal education to pursue experiential learning through work, volunteer, travel and personal interest activities. Students take gap years for many reasons, including but not limited to addressing financial need, mental or physical health concerns, gaining clarity on career or educational prospects, or deepening their understanding of themselves or the world.

Our mission is to reduce systemic barriers to this beneficial life-event by reducing the stigma of intentional “time outs,” redefining societal understanding of gap year objectives, activities and accessibility and by fostering awareness at the secondary and post-secondary educational levels.

The problem: Families realize that their child is not ready for the ‘next step’ and would benefit from some additional time HOWEVER, they are not aware that a gap year is a viable option or the diverse possibilities of a gap year. Families are unaware of the gap year pathway concept and, as a result, not accessing all of the resources that CanGap offers to support them in building a stronger foundation for their young person.

Be part of the solution: CanGap is hiring an Event Marketing Specialist to increase our reach with the overall goal of supporting more young people developing transferable and life skills through an extended period of experiential learning.

Help grow and strengthen our marketing and communication initiatives through strategy, storytelling and content development.


  • Develop event marketing strategy and materials for the 2022/23 school year with a focus on Gap Year Frosh Week 2022 in September
  • Develop our 2022/23 community Discord strategy
  • Develop diverse digital content for our social media platforms, including YouTube and Discord
  • Coordinate speaker, sponsor and attendee communications for Gap Year Frosh Week 2022
  • Update design and content of existing community resources
  • Lead partner research, outreach, onboarding and communication for the 2022/23 school year

Key Attributes

  • Passion for experiential learning/gap years/youth development: advancing the Gap Year Movement takes passion and a deep understanding of its benefits that cannot be taught. Aligning with the Gap Year Movement and CanGap’s mission is essential.
  • Acutely aware of social and environmental justice issues and how they impact the gap year space, including the impact of race, racism and historical exclusion.
  • Ability to work remotely: work well independently, take initiative, manage multiple projects and deadline effectively, strong team communication, comfortable with project management software (Airtable), unafraid to ask clarifying questions, timely in escalating issues
  • Comfortable working as part of a small non-profit team where each member takes on a wide variety of tasks
  • Ability to adapt to changing situations and priorities
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills
  • Ability to navigate between voices: this role will work closely with gappers (17–24-year-olds) and high-level professionals (school board directors) and must maintain appropriate communication for each audience.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Relevant experience in the communication, content creation or marketing field
  • Knowledge of managing and optimizing a business YouTube Channel
  • Ability to work optimize social media posts through Social Sprout, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn
  • Graphic design of social media posts, marketing material and workbooks/downloads
  • Copywriting experience for varied audiences and objectives
  • Google and social analytics qualification/certifications preferred


$20/hour, full-time (35 hours per week) contract from July 1 - August 31, 2022

Upon successful completion of the 2022 summer contract, there is possibility of extension into winter 2023
