Action Against Hunger’s External Relations Department seeks a resourceful Communications Officer who believes in the power of storytelling to mobilize public support for humanitarian crises and the fight to end hunger. This individual is familiar with international development and humanitarian issues, and excels in writing, editing, and managing projects under tight deadlines. Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Communications and working closely with the Senior Communications Officer, the Communications Officer will be responsible for researching, writing, and editing a broad range of communications assets; developing stories from concept through publication; producing collateral to support corporate partnerships and fundraising initiatives; and managing web content and social media.

KEY ACTIVITIES IN YOUR ROLE WILL INCLUDE

Curating and supporting content development to drive the organization’s communications strategy and increase our revenue streams.

Engaging potential and existing donors on subjects related to the organization’s activities and mission. Expand outreach and promote brand awareness through creative story telling, donor materials, and social media outreach.

  • Under supervision of the Associate Director of Communications, supporting the Communications team with editing and creating multimedia content. 
  • Serving as project manager for key digital and print communications.
  • Producing and managing a range of communications assets, photo and video library, presentations, and marketing collateral to support external relations strategy.
  • Managing, producing, and curating content for Action Against Hunger website (excluding fundraising platforms and features) and updates website content.
  • Supporting the Communications team in website migration and overhaul, including by proofreading and drafting content.
  • Supporting the Communications team in drafting video scripts, talking points, fact sheets, press releases, and other material to support issue positioning, thought leadership, and media relations.
  • Managing social media; produces and curates content for social media platforms. Develops strategy to grow Action Against Hunger’s social media following, including through additional channels such as LinkedIn.
  • Contributing to weekly content meetings as well as editorial calendar across print and digital channels.
  • Collaborating with digital and direct marketing team, partnerships team, events team, and major donor team on special campaigns and initiatives.
  • Developing relationships with our technical and operations teams both in the U.S. and in the field to gather content and programmatic information on an ongoing basis.
  • Supporting special projects (media outreach, advocacy, campaigns, brand management, etc.) as needed.
  • Providing general writing and editorial support to field teams, technical experts, senior management team, and other internal stakeholders as needed.
  • Exercising judgment and discretion in communicating about humanitarian emergencies with highly complex and sensitive issues.
  • Occasionally supervising interns or external vendors such as graphic designers or freelance writers.


DO YOU MEET THE PROFILE REQUIRED CRITERIA?
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • At least 3-5 years in communications or public relations, or some combination as a journalist and PR/communications practitioner.
  • Experience working with an international NGO.
  • Knowledge of international development and humanitarian work.
  • Experience managing and monitoring social media to raise visibility and build an engaged online community.
  • Experience in ensuring all communications adhere to brand guidelines and editorial standards.
  • Experience in the following is highly desired:
  • editing short videos for social media posts
  • basic graphic design skills for brochures or infographics
  • writing and optimizing web content
  • Experience producing communications tailored to a range of different target audiences.
  • Native English speaker. Other language skills are a plus.
  • Experience assisting in the production of annual reports and communications collateral is a plus.
