The Center for Court Innovation is a non-profit organization that works to create a more effective and humane justice system by performing original research and helping launch reforms around the world. The Center creates operating projects that have been documented to reduce the use of jail and prison, assist victims of crime, and strengthen communities. Nationally and internationally, the Center performs original research and provides consulting services to justice innovators.
Brooklyn Justice Initiatives seeks to forge a new response to misdemeanor and non-violent felony defendants in Kings County, New York. Operating out of Kings County Criminal Court, Brooklyn Justice Initiatives is staffed by a team of court-based social workers, case managers, and court liaisons. By providing meaningful pre-trial supervised release and post-conviction sentencing options, Brooklyn Justice Initiatives seeks to use an arrest as a window of opportunity to change the direction of a defendant’s life and avoid the harmful effects of incarceration.
Brooklyn Justice Initiatives is seeking a Clinical Director for its Alternative-to-Incarceration (ATI) programming for individuals charged with misdemeanors and non-violent felonies. Programming currently includes human trafficking interventions, a Behavioral Health Unit, and ATI services for both youth and adults. Reporting to the Deputy Project Director, the Clinical Director is responsible for the overall management and operations of Brooklyn Justice Initiatives’ Clinical Department. The Clinical Director will work closely with other managers at BJI, including the Director of Court Operations, Coordinator of Intake, and a Senior Social Worker. The Clinical Director will regularly be asked to collaborate with the Supervised Release Program as well.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
· Provide direct clinical supervision (individual and group) to a team of clinicians (social workers, case managers, and mental health counselors);
· Identify and address clinical issues within BJI ATI programming;
· Enhance and maintain relationships with stakeholders, including prosecutors, defense attorneys, and other court staff;
· Oversee clinical assessments and collaborate with clinical staff to submit appropriate treatment recommendations;
· Oversee operations in the Intake Department by working closely with the Coordinator of Intake;
· Develop and maintain relationships with community-based partners and service providers;
· Oversee and maintain specialty practice within the Behavioral Health Unit of the Clinical Department;
· Continue to foster relationships with other CCI projects, including the Red Hook Community Justice Center and Brownsville Community Justice Center;
· Oversee and manage client information in electronic databases;
· Develop a plan for effective crisis management across BJI departments;
· Ensure accurate reporting in court on mandates from the Clinical Department;
· Manage a small caseload of clients, as needed;
· Ensure proper data entry and reporting to stakeholders and funders;
· Develop and maintain on-site psychoeducation groups;
· Attend and facilitate (as appropriate) staff meetings;
· Develop trainings for Clinical Department and other departments as needed;
· Assist with toxicology testing protocols when necessary; and
· Attend Brooklyn Justice Initiatives’ events after hours, as needed.
Qualifications: This dynamic position requires an individual with both direct practice experience and knowledge of the criminal justice system. Additional requirements include:
· LCSW, or equivalent, in New York State;
· At least three years of direct practice with individuals presenting with issues related to mental health, substance abuse, trauma, etc.; experience working in a criminal court setting and/or with mandated clients strongly preferred;
· Highly organized, ability to multi-task, and desire to work in a fast-paced environment;
· Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds in a culturally-competent manner;
· Excellent verbal communication and writing skills required;
· Bilingual preferred (English/Spanish, or other languages).
