About The GO Project
The GO Project’s vision is to close the achievement gap for all under-resourced families who have children that are struggling in their New York City public school. By providing access to coordinated, comprehensive, and effective programs, GO supports families in ensuring their child’s success in school, at home, and in life.
Founded in 1968, the GO Project has a long history of serving public school children that are struggling academically. As of January 2018, the GO Project is serving 735 young people in grades K-8. Unique to the GO Project is our public/private partnership model. Host site partners donate space and resources to the GO Project on Saturday’s and during the summer to operate our programs. Current host site partners include Grace Church, Grace Church School, LREI, Avenues – the World School, St. Luke’s and Berkeley Carroll.
The GO Project has been named one of the most effective summer program models in the United States by the National Summer Learning Association (www.summerlearning.org), and was highlighted as an effective out-of-school time program as part of American Graduate Day on PBS (www.americangraduate.org). This is an exciting time in the history of the GO Project. In June 2013, the GO Project completed a 5-year strategic plan that has guided the organization’s growth on the Lower East Side and New York City. As of 2018, the GO Project has increased enrollment by 30% on the Lower East Side, and has expanded to a new neighborhood in Brooklyn. To fund this growth, the GO Project successfully completed a $2.5million growth campaign in early 2017. As the organization completes the final year in the strategic plan, and prepares for the next strategic planning process in early 2019, the team continues to work towards deepening partnerships with public schools and host sites, building on our strong family engagement practices, developing a gold standard level of evidence for our programs and increasing visibility in New York City and in the broader field of education.
The GO Project is seeking a Director of Individual Giving who will play a key role in fulfilling the organization’s mission by managing and growing the organization’s major gift program ($10,000 and above) and individual giving revenue generally. The Director will work closely with the CDO and Executive Director to meet new and aggressive revenue targets over the next three years designed to sustain and broaden GO’s expansion efforts. This individual will be an ambassador for the organization and will develop and execute a fundraising and marketing strategy to achieve the organizations goals, as well as to drive donor support for the organization. Key responsibilities will include:
- Lead efforts to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors to achieve all income goals for individual giving
- Develop a pipeline of Major Gifts ($10,000 - $49,999)
- Develop a pipeline of Leadership Gifts ($50,000+)
- Plan and implement strategies to secure funding based on the GO Project’s organizational priorities
- With the CDO, develop working relationships with Board members to support fundraising efforts
- With the ED and CDO, play a role in Board stewardship and recruitment
- Oversee the Annual Appeal campaign including direct mail and digital fundraising
- With the CDO and Senior Development Manager, oversee planning of the Annual Benefit and other fundraising and cultivation events
- Work closely with the Senior Development Manager to build and execute a mid-level donor strategy and increase revenue through the Young Leadership Council
- Collaborate with GO Project staff and volunteers to develop meaningful and strategic relationships with current and prospective donors
- Create consistent, high quality communications, such as letters, funding proposals, reports and other materials
- Maintain and develop systems to ensure effective record keeping, acknowledgement and follow-up with individual donors
- Utilize data from Raiser’s Edge database and wealth screening services to help identify prospective donors and build personalized engagement strategies
- Serve as the CDO’s deputy, periodically assuming delegated decision-making responsibilities for various development activities
- Implement various advisory groups or committees as needed to support achievement of fundraising goals and develop new strategies for cultivation and funding
- Assist in setting and tracking annual development department revenue goals
- Attend and present at quarterly Development Committee meetings and Board of Directors meetings as needed
- Support foundation/corporate stewardship and cultivation as needed
Qualifications and Requirements
The ideal candidate will be passionate about the GO Project’s mission and programs and bring a successful track record of fundraising to the organization. The candidate will see the possibilities as opposed to the obstacles and is creative and tenacious in solving problems. They will enjoy working with others in a collaborative, creative environment, and will have a strong work ethic and high standards for his/her own work and the work of others.
- Minimum of 5 years of fundraising experience, with a background in major gifts/individual giving highly preferred
- Direct solicitation experience required
- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills necessary to tailor messages to various audiences and be an effective representative for GO Project
- Track record in designing and implementing systems based on development best practices
- Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities
- A strong belief in the ability of high quality education and support services to create change.
- Exceptional relationship building skills and experience inspiring support from diverse constituent groups, from community members to high level funders
- Comfort interfacing with executives and high net-worth individuals
- Ability to use discretion and judgment in handling confidential and sensitive information
- Strong analytic skills; able to make strategic and tactical decisions through data-driven decision making
- Commitment to high standards of excellence
- Familiarity with diverse cultural backgrounds
- Familiarity with donor management software (the GO Project utilizes Raiser’s Edge)
- Strong PC, Microsoft Office and Internet skills.
