Purpose of the Position:

The C&O Canal Trust seeks an enthusiastic, people-oriented Coordinator to manage and support teams of volunteers (“Canal Stewards”) who adopt certain sites within the Park and are responsible for specific maintenance and resource management tasks. Work with Park and Trust staff to assess various Park sites and determine how best to expand their care and beautification through regular volunteer efforts. Expand the Canal Steward Program by recruiting more volunteers and community constituents to adopt certain areas of the Park and be responsible for maintenance and resource management tasks which directly improve the visitor experience at the Park.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage and support volunteer groups caring for a specific site within Park boundaries. Canal Stewards’ tasks include painting, laying stone dust and mulch, pulling weeds and invasive plant species, pruning branches, collecting trash, scraping and cleaning charcoal grills, raking leaves, and other site-specific tasks as needed.
  • Maintain regular contact with Canal Stewards throughout the month and year as they care for their site. Act as a liaison between the Canal Stewards and Park maintenance departments, providing supplies, such as paint and stone dust, when needed, and answering questions as necessary. Meet new volunteers onsite for training and orientation, and conduct regular site visits to assess work being performed by all volunteer groups. Manage quantity and quality of work as needed.
  • Expand the Canal Stewards Program by developing a recruitment plan targeting local organizations, businesses, and the general public. Conduct community outreach and connect with diverse groups in the communities adjacent to the Park.
  • Maintain records on volunteers and service, including hours spent and activities completed, keeping track of supplies borrowed from the Trust and the Park, and questions and issues that arose from and with the Canal Stewards.
  • Work in cooperation with Park Maintenance staff to borrow equipment and vehicles, solve problems, and other tasks as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements and Expectations

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor’s degree (or working toward one) in outdoor recreation, natural resources, parks and recreation management, nonprofit management, or related field preferred.
  • Have a personal vehicle, a good driving record, and the ability to travel anywhere in the Park between Cumberland and Georgetown and to Park headquarters in Hagerstown, Maryland.
  • Be able to telework when necessary; must be able to set up a quiet, dedicated home work space with an Internet connection, good cell phone reception, and a suitable environment for videoconferencing calls (such as Zoom). A laptop computer and training on videoconferencing and other platforms will be provided.
  • Able to work well independently or with a team, including supervising individuals or teams of volunteers, which may include some strong personalities.

·        Able to speak, read, write, and communicate fluently in English. This includes giving instructions and clarifying explanations when needed, especially to those of other cultures, language speakers, or generations. Fluency in another language is not required.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel, Google Docs, and the Internet. Able to complete reports and communications in a clear, thorough and timely manner.
  • Must be willing to follow all policies, maintain professional boundaries, and appropriately represent the C&O Canal Trust. This includes refraining from the use of tobacco products, alcohol, and drugs while involved in the program. All local, Trust, and Park safety protocols, including those related to COVID-19, must be respected and followed. A clean, professional demeanor, a friendly attitude, and good time management skills are a must.
