POSITION SUMMARY:

This year, Seattle Humane will be taking part in King County's Jobs and Housing program and will provide employment to participants experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity. The focus of the Human Resources Specialist in this position will be supporting the participants in the program in their transition to employment at Seattle Humane. The position will work with partner organizations, and will be responsible for hiring participants, supporting them and coordinating their services. In addition, this position will provide support to the HR team in general, including recruitment, administration, training and more.

 

Employment period: Grant-funded position for one year through April of 2023 with the potential extended on a yearly basis.

 

ABOUT THE KING COUNTY JOBS AND HOUSING PROGRAM

The Jobs and Housing Program is designed to help individuals experiencing homelessness find employment. King County has long faced unacceptable levels of homelessness, and currently, the County is experiencing record levels of homelessness. Like the rest of the country, the COVID-19 pandemic and associated recession has had significant impacts on employment. Job loss and homelessness have been especially significant in certain sectors of the economy such as food service and hospitality because of COVID-19 restrictions. The program addresses these problems by providing jobs allowing individuals to gain skills and experience to support future stable employment.

 

ABOUT THE SEATTLE HUMANE JOBS PROGRAM

For nearly 125 years, Seattle Humane has been promoting the human-animal bond by saving and serving pets in need. Seattle Humane is a community resource center, providing adoption services, a pet food bank and support for pet owners, low-cost spay/neuter surgeries and wellness exams, humane education and more. Seattle Humane's Jobs Program will support individuals experiencing homelessness with securing good jobs in growing industries with living wages, benefits, and career advancement opportunities.

 

KEY OR ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Oversee and contribute to all aspects of the Jobs and Housing program.
  • Coordinate outreach, recruiting, and onboarding for program participants.
  • Serves as liaison between Seattle Humane departments and program participants to provide training and employee relations needs.
  • Coordinate with Jobs and Housing team for mobility service needs.
  • Maintain employee records, track, and report on program participants' progress to internal/external partners.
  • Partners with King County Jobs and Housing team to facilitate career navigation services.
  • Coordinate Jobs and Housing staff and case management providers to connect case management services for program participants.
  • Provides timely and accurate information to Jobs and Housing team and Seattle Humane leadership for grant reporting, as requested.
  • Communicates effectively about the Jobs and Housing program to a variety of audiences.
  • Assists with handling program participants issues or concerns; refers to department management as needed to facilitate solutions.
  • As needed, collaborates with external agencies (career navigators, case managers) to coordinate services for program participants

 

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION OR TRAINING:

  • Experience working in social/human services or a related field; experience working in a shelter setting or with those experiencing homelessness homeless population.
  • An understanding of the barriers to housing, employment and other accessible resources often faced by those experiencing homelessness.
  • Knowledge of the impacts of substance use disorders and behavioral health issues
  • Experience in human resources, social work, housing programs and/or community development programming
  • Working understanding of human resource principles, practices and procedures
  • Must possess organizational and planning skills to work independently and determine work priorities and schedules
  • Understanding of the effects of systemic racism and its intersections with poverty and homelessness
  • Experience with trauma informed care and ability to implement it in a new environment
  • Commitment to the Seattle Humane mission, values and behaviors. Passion for animals, their welfare and their connection with humans.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office environment, internet use and e-mail; basic knowledge Paycom HRIS or other HRIS systems.
  • Ability to connect, build trust and sustain relationships with wide variety of individuals and communities, from all walks of life and from diverse backgrounds and skill levels.
  • Communicates effectively verbally and in writing. Experience using interpersonal skills including active listening and effective coaching.


Work Hours: Part-time, non-exempt position. 24 hours per week scheduled, three to five days a week. General office hours with occasional evening and/or weekend hours. The position is grant-funded for through April 2023, with potential to be extended on a yearly basis.
