Position Summary

Madison Audubon Society seeks an enthusiastic, charismatic, innovative, organized and responsible individual with an appreciation for nature and the environment to join its team. The Director of Philanthropy position is responsible for planning, implementing, and overseeing Madison Audubon’s fundraising initiatives and activities to assure the long-term financial sustainability of the organization and support its programs and operations. The Director of Philanthropy works across the organization, with the board of directors, the staff, and the development committee, to create and develop sustaining relationships with governmental agencies, foundations, donors, businesses, and volunteers.


Primary Duties

  • Steward and engage existing donors through written and oral communications, and personal interactions
  • Research, identify and contact new donor prospects (individuals, foundations and corporations)
  • Arrange visits for and engage with major donors
  • Solicit funding for operational and program needs including for endowments and unrestricted funds
  • Maintain comprehensive donor information, contact and giving records
  • Collaborate with the executive director and staff to develop and write proposals for funding opportunities
  • Engage with staff and leadership to develop annual organizational and programmatic fund-raising priorities, plans and strategies
  • Develop and manage budget and timeline for all development activities
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of marketing and outreach in support of fundraising efforts
  • Provide leadership for capital campaigns, planned giving and estate planning
  • Work with the Madison Audubon Development Committee and the board of directors on donor relations and fundraising activities


Desired Qualifications and Skills

  • Strong written and oral communication abilities and skills to engage strategically and persuasively with others
  • Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents
  • Effective organizational and project management skills
  • Strong client service orientation and attention to detail
  • Ability to take initiative, build an atmosphere of team collaboration, and interact with a variety of people and situations
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and to work under the pressure of deadlines
  • Excellent analytical and strategic thinking skills
  • Excellent judgment, ethics, and personal initiative
  • Keen interest in and considerable familiarity with birds and natural resources in Wisconsin and ability to communicate comfortably with donors about diverse conservation issues
  • Working knowledge and use of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and donor database management tools
  • Donor research experience


Position Requirements

  • Regularly required to communicate and engage effectively with others
  • Must conduct regular office/computer work
  • Required to conduct periodic day travel (e.g., to visit with donors)
  • Periodically must attend/participate in Madison Audubon events and programs, with occasional work on nights and weekends, as needed
  • Required to work periodically in natural environments and outdoor weather conditions
