Description

This is a position working within two of the family of programs at Homeless Children’s Network.

HCN’s services are designed to meet the unique needs of each child and family. When designing treatment programs, our therapists take into account the needs and strengths, ages, and stages of development of the child and individual family members. Families learn to cope more effectively with the traumas of homelessness and domestic violence, learn new social emotional skills and strategies, and create a more balanced and healthy family environment.

About our Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment (EPSDT) Program

Therapists work individually with children to help prevent or resolve psycho-social difficulties experienced by a child as a result of their homelessness. Through talk and play therapy, and other support mechanisms, we help youth explore their emotions freely, express them safely and develop their ability to communicate them in the most appropriate way. We believe that giving children the opportunity to communicate enables them to gain more control over their own behavior.

We also support the mental health needs of parents by providing strength-based therapies and counseling services. We help parents achieve mental and emotional stability so that they can increase their connection to the child(ren) and cultivate a healthy environment in which them.

About the Early Childhood Mental Health Initiative

HCN is one of five agencies throughout San Francisco that provides services focused on early childhood mental health consultation. We work directly with staff of the agencies and offer valuable support, feedback and advice on how to implement effective programs for their clients to ensure healthy development during this crucial developmental stage of life. Services include consultation to parents, referrals for specialized services, parent education and support groups, direct therapeutic intervention with children and families, onsite training and support for providers, program consultation for partner sites, and child observation.

About Homeless Children’s Network

HCN works to decrease the impact of trauma and to empower families. Our comprehensive clinical services enable us to work closely with each family to understand their needs and to connect them to HCN's internal resources and our external partners. We form a trusted relationship and follow our clients over time, providing security and stability that allows them to become more stable and confident, raise healthy and emotionally independent children, and develop skills and training that will help lift them out of the cycle of homelessness.
