The Beacon seeks a dynamic, self-starting attorney who has vision, initiative, and a demonstrated commitment and passion for public interest law to fill a staff attorney position in their Houston office. In addition to providing daily representation in civil legal matters, the successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to identifying and taking advantage of opportunities for strategic advocacy and to engaging in outreach to and collaboration with low-income persons, including community groups that are made up of or serve the indigent. This position will be working primarily on programming related to reentry and criminal justice involved clients.


Duties & Responsibilities:

The Staff Attorney’s responsibilities will include case management, litigation and advocacy on behalf of individual clients. Essential duties and responsibilities include: client case triage and interviewing in homeless shelter setting, advocacy and negotiations with opposing parties and counsel, discovery, motions, etc. In addition to carrying their own caseload, the Staff Attorney will oversee and supervise paralegal staff as well as work with volunteer attorneys to provide pro bono advocacy and legal services, and other duties as assigned. The Staff Attorney will oversee regular legal intake at area homeless shelters where they will provide legal counsel, advice, and representation to low-income individuals facing eviction, termination of public benefits, family law, ID restoration and immigration issues, among other things. 

The successful candidate must have excellent writing, advocacy, communication and organizational skills. Beacon Law seeks an attorney with a proven ability to think strategically and creatively about legal procedure and litigation and one that possesses an activist spirit and a passion for our clients. 


• Licensed to practice law in Texas

• Prior legal services, public interest, or volunteer experience serving low-income persons preferred.

• Excellent written and oral communication skills

• Strong writing and analytical skills

• Strong leadership skills and ability to supervise teams of volunteers

• Spanish speaking preferred but not required
