Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) is seeking Legal Assistants for the Family Defense Practice (FDP)’s administrative team.

BDS is a multi-disciplinary defense office representing low-income New Yorkers in criminal, family, immigration, and civil legal matters. Our expertise lies in the intersection of these legal systems that disproportionately impact poor, Black, Latinx, and immigrant communities.

BDS represents thousands of people each year who have diverse, complex, and multi-faceted legal needs. In addition to a zealous legal defense, our interdisciplinary teams of attorneys, social workers and advocates provide a wide range of legal and advocacy services, including housing, public benefits, education, and employment issues. BDS is a public defense office where staff work collaboratively and across disciplines to deliver high-quality legal services that serve the people we represent, their families and communities in Brooklyn.

BDS’ Family Defense Practice (FDP) is the primary provider of legal representation for parents and caretakers who are accused of neglect or abuse in Brooklyn Family Court under Article 10 of the Family Court Act. Attorneys handle clients’ Article 10 cases and any related matters, including Termination of Parental Rights, custody, family offense, paternity, visitation, or other petitions.

FDP’s interdisciplinary teams of attorneys, social workers, and advocates provide comprehensive representation to parents which includes zealous legal representation and litigation as well as social work advocacy at foster care and other agencies that impact the future of the family. FDP staff also works closely with BDS’ other practices to ensure clients have access to needed additional services and resources through our interdisciplinary practice model. 

The Legal Assistant will work under the direct supervision of the Administrative Support Manager and provide litigation and administrative support to FDP case handlers.


Responsibilities:

 

·      Draft subpoenas and medical and education records requests and follow up with hospitals, schools, and the police department to obtain the records.

·      Provide administrative support to and be part of the training committee, including scheduling meetings and trainings, taking notes, preparing materials, and ensuring that attorneys receive CLE credit.

·      Provide administrative support to attorney hiring and recruitment efforts, including scheduling candidate interviews.

·      Assist in intake in Family Court several times a month when FDP is assigned new clients.

·      Maintain practice shared calendars for staff rotations and time off.

·      Participate in general duties of the administrative team as needed, including conducting conflict checks for new clients, drafting client letters, contacting service providers, pulling orders from court system database, requesting transcripts, assembling and redacting documents in Adobe Acrobat, filing and serving motions, and other administrative tasks. 

·      Other responsibilities as assigned.


Qualifications:

 

·      Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.

·      Strong organizational and administrative skills

·      Critical thinking and problem-solving skills (able to analyze the way something works, identify ways it could be improved, explain those ideas to others)

·      Excellent oral and written communication skills

·      Ability to take responsibility for multiple varied tasks and organize own time to ensure all tasks are completed accurately and on time

·      Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat

·      Prior experience working with case management systems (data entry) preferred.

·      Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

·      Flexibility to take on a variety of duties as needed to support the work of the team

·      Applicants bilingual in languages commonly spoken in Brooklyn, such as Spanish, Mandarin, Haitian Creole, and Russian, are encouraged to apply. 

 

Position Information

This is a full-time, non-exempt, salaried position. The normal schedule is Monday to Friday 9am-5pm. The position is based at BDS’s offices in Downtown Brooklyn, primarily 195 Montague Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201 and at the Brooklyn Family Court, 330 Jay Street, Brooklyn, NY 11021 (when it is open). At time of posting, administrative staff are working a hybrid schedule of remote and in-person work. Applicants should be prepared to move flexibly between in-person and remote work as policies and needs shift through the pandemic.

 

BDS determines salary on a pay scale, which is visible to all employees. Salary is commensurate with education and experience, starting at $52,000 for a 2021 college graduate BDS also offers comprehensive benefits including health and dental insurance, short-term disability and life insurance, a 403(b) retirement plan, pre-tax commuter benefit, pre-tax flexible spending accounts, and above-average vacation, sick, holiday, family, and medical leave policies
