Description

The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is a nonpartisan law and policy institute that seeks to improve our systems of democracy and justice. The Center’s work ranges from voting rights to campaign finance reform, from ending mass incarceration to preserving Constitutional protections in the fight against terrorism. Part think tank, part advocacy group, part cutting edge communications hub, we start with rigorous research. We craft innovative policies. And we fight for them — in Congress and the states, the courts, and in the court of public opinion.

The Brennan Center’s Justice Program seeks to improve our criminal justice system by ending mass incarceration while keeping the country safe. The program blends law, policy, and economics to produce new empirical analyses and advance innovative policy solutions to advance this goal at the federal and state level.

Position: The Justice Program is seeking a full-time Research & Program Associate (RPA) to join a cutting edge inter-disciplinary team working to end mass incarceration in the United States. The RPA will provide statistical research and administrative support, working with an economist and reporting to a program counsel. Projects will include: periodic reports compiling and analyzing crime data; reports studying the economic consequences of mass incarceration; and other statistical research projects as they arise.

The RPA will provide quantitative research and analysis for these projects; support the writing and editing of reports that present these findings; assist with the release of reports, including organizing events; and provide administrative support to the team. The ideal candidate will be a college graduate with 1-3 years of research experience who is considering a career in law, public policy, economics, or social science.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide quantitative research support, including: gathering hard-to-find data; managing large datasets; analyzing data using statistical programs (such as Stata); and helping draft and refine research methodologies for reports.
  • Provide research, drafting, and fact-checking support for reports summarizing these findings to the general public.
  • Assist with the rollout of these reports, including: research for opinion pieces, managing mailings to high-level stakeholders, helping prepare and schedule presentations, and helping organize major events.
  • Perform a wide range of administrative tasks, including: making travel arrangements, proofreading, completing expense reports, and other program support as needed.
  • Overtime (compensated at 1 ½ times the regular hourly rate) may be required to meet important deadlines.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree. (Lawyers and those with advanced degrees will not be considered.)
  • 1-3 years of work experience preferred. Experience in criminal justice economics, or statistics are a plus.
  • Ability to think creatively about how to obtain data, analyze it, and persuasively present it to an audience.
  • Experience using Stata to manipulate and analyze large datasets.
  • Superb statistical and quantitative research skills, ability to quickly conduct research and obtain hard to find data, and creativity and perseverance in finding required data and information.
  • Strong writing skills, including the ability to succinctly translate jargon into accessible prose for lay audiences.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, willingness to work overtime near deadlines, self-reliance, and strong work ethic.

Salary: Commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits package.
