Intro/Program Description: Goddard Riverside Community Center is a well established Manhattan community based agency with an annual operating budget of approximately $ 30 million. Goddard Riverside is one of New York City’s leading human service organizations meeting the basic needs of children, youth and families, homeless people, and older adults through 27 plus programs at 22 sites across Manhattan.


Purpose of Position: Reporting to the Deputy Executive Director for Resource Development & Engagement, the Manager of Special Events is responsible for developing and executing fundraising events with the goal of creating meaningful and impactful events that garner increased revenue, awareness, donor loyalty and new supporters for Goddard Riverside. In addition, the Manager will collaborate with the Development and Communications team to increase overall fundraising efforts, coordinate communications across multiple event platforms, and steward donors through their engagement in events.

Days: Monday through Friday, some weekend and holiday events

Hours: 10:00am to 6:00pm, some evening events

Role, Responsibilities, and Essential Duties

  • Manage overall fundraising operations for fundraising events including a gala, a weekend community event, holiday meals, two smaller event series and two larger cocktail party events
  • Draft text for solicitations, invitations, acknowledgements, program journals and event appeals
  • Coordinate and manage event timelines, logistics, schedules, budgets and financial records for all special events
  • Source, engage and supervise vendors including venues, mail houses, and other suppliers
  • Oversee attendee and sponsor attendance, outreach and solicit sponsorships and ticket sales
  • Manage all logistics for events, including facilities, transportation, contracts, seating charts event timelines, and production schedules
  • Liaise with sponsors and attendees to enhance relationships
  • Evaluate overall results of special events campaigns; provide recommendations, modifications and new approaches to support successful achievement of department and organizational goals
  • Coordinate event work flow, priorities and coordinate the collaboration with other departments
  • Coordinate with Director of Public Relations on event marketing
  • Ensure event fundraising actions are tracked and recorded in the donor database, produce regular event reports for staff and Board
  • Draft run of show and staffing assignments. Recruit and manage event volunteers and serve as event point-person on-site
  • Coordinate volunteer event committees; leverage volunteers to make events successful
  • Work as member of Development and Communications team on related projects as needed

Qualifications/Educational Requirements

  • Associates degree required, Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • 3-5 years experience coordinating fundraising and non-profit events
  • Strong commitment to the mission of Goddard Riverside
  • Positive can-do attitude, with no task too big or small
  • Ability to work some late evenings, weekends and occasional holidays to accommodate event schedules
  • Outgoing, energetic with excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work with all types of people
  • Experience in volunteer management a plus

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Ability to multi-task and take full ownership of assigned projects
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and superior attention to detail and ability to edit and proofread
  • Resourceful, creative problem-solver
  • Basic cellphone photography skills and/or willingness to learn
  • Detail oriented, extremely organized
  • Ability to work with a diverse population, both inside and outside the agency 
  • Self-directed with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team


Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be:

  • Excellent user of office technology and information systems (including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and donor database, DonorPerfect


Physical Requirements

  • Moderate computer and phone use
  • Regular off-site visits to events and event locations
  • Walking/standing for long periods of time during fundraising events
