Job Description – Part-Time Volunteer Coordinator


Reports to: Academic Director


Background

Hudson River Community Sailing (HRCS) develops academic success and leadership in underserved NYC youth, and provides maritime education to the city at large. We work in partnership with public high schools to teach math, science, and leadership to underserved public high school students through sailing and boatbuilding. HRCS serves the broader community through a Community Sailing school that provides sailing lessons and a membership program. HRCS has locations in Chelsea and Inwood.


Summary 

The Volunteer Coordinator is a key member of a small, hardworking, and fun staff dedicated to supporting students through a waterfront community of donors, members, and volunteers. 


You will help build a community of volunteers dedicated to helping youth succeed. The Coordinator cultivates, onboards, and schedules volunteers who play an essential role in all aspects of the organization. Volunteers are some of our best ambassadors, and often become donors and supporters. 


The ideal candidate is hardworking, personable, organized, enjoys fostering relationships, and is able to work across departments to support the organization’s needs. This position is one that will play a key role in creating a welcoming environment for volunteers, ensuring that their schedules are well coordinated, efficient, and satisfy both the needs of the volunteers and that of the organization. 


Schedule is flexible, but ideally the coordinator is available during after school hours when programs are occurring.This is a part-time role.


Responsibilities


  1. Coordinates the onboarding and scheduling of volunteers including: scheduling and leading regular orientations, intake forms, background checks, updating handbook/agreement, training, surveys, and more
  2. Sends monthly newsletters to volunteers 
  3. Coordinate logistics for trainings throughout the year
  4. Initiates and maintains organizational relationships with volunteers
  5. Coordinates with development department regarding corporate volunteer groups 


Skills & Qualifications

  1. Excellent communication skills
  2. A love of and knack for working with people. 
  3. Positive, energetic, and able to motivate others
  4. Ability to multitask and work in a busy environment and small office, where collaboration and communication are key to success
  5. Ability to communicate mission and goals of organization and departments to external and internal stakeholders
  6. Organizational skills: able to work independently, follow up on tasks, set timelines, manage projects with multiple players, variables and shared resources
  7. Willingness and availability to work occasional evenings and weekends. 
  8. Technology and social media experience and acumen
  9. A passion for working with youth. Interest in sailing or waterfront sports a plus, but not necessary

Benefits
