The Southern Poverty Law Center seeks a Social Media Strategist to join its Digital team to assist in the development and implementation of social media and digital strategies that both shape public discourse and elevate the organization’s programmatic work, including on its Immigrant Justice Project, Economic Justice Project, Criminal Justice Reform, Voting Rights and Children’s Rights.

The Social Media Strategist will report directly to the Digital Director and will be responsible for a wide array of communications activities that further amplify the organization’s legal, policy and programmatic work regionally and nationally.

This job posting is for two positions for any of the locations listed on this posting.  

Primary Job Functions:

  • Overseeing a specific body of work determined by the Social Media Manager.
  • Developing and implementing comprehensive social media strategies, with input and guidance from the Social Media Manager that build
  • public support for SPLC’s litigation, legislation, programs work and other initiatives across social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
  • Tracking breaking news related to litigation, legislation and public policy and working with the communications team on rapid response communications tactics.
  • Collaborating with team members in Creative, Editorial, Development, Legal programs to create, develop and implement social campaigns that shape public discourse and engage target audiences.
  • Analyzing social data – including impressions and traction — to inform strategies.
  • Increasing social networking engagement and followers across platforms.
  • Monitoring mentions across social media channels.


Education and Related Work Experience:

  • At least 1 year of professional experience working in a digital/social media capacity.
  • Complete proficiency with digital media practices, tools, and platforms and social media.
  • A keen understanding of how digital strategies are applied to public relations and engagement.
  • Experience working for a nonprofit, political campaign or social action campaign a plus.
  • Highschool Diploma or GED required.

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrable knowledge of online engagement and activism.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of creation of compelling social media content.
  • Ability to multi-task in high-pressure situations.
  • Highly proactive and innovative problem solver.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to independently manage priorities.
  • Ability to adapt to rapid developments and shifting deadlines.
  • Ability to work with staff across all organizational programs.
  • Positive, energetic, personable, and respectful of others.
  • Comfortable working with remote colleagues and using interoffice online communications tools.
  • Commitment to ideals of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Commitment to fostering an anti-racist work culture and to anti-racist principles and learning.
