Location: New York. To comply with social distancing restrictions, AmeriCorps Members will be supported in working from home (subject to change depending on the ongoing pandemic). PGP will provide office space for meetings as needed.

Tentative Schedule: M-F, 9am – 5pm

# of member Slots in this Position: 2

NEED FOR THE SPECIFIC PROJECT ON WHICH AMERICORPS MEMBER IS SERVING:

The AmeriCorps Members will support the expansion of the Petey Greene Program, contributing to recruit, train and manage a hundred volunteer tutors, who will advance the academic pursuits of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated students in New York City. While the pandemic has posed near-term challenges to our programming in NYC, it has increased the need and opportunity to expand our tutoring program exponentially in the near future, providing academic tutoring to reentering students and leveraging emergency-driven investment in education technology to offer blended-learning programs inside NYC jails and prisons. This expansion will require scaling up our volunteer operation to meet the increased demand. The AmeriCorps members will play a central role in recruiting and managing volunteer tutors, coordinating campus events to recruit volunteers among graduate and undergraduate students, supporting tutor training, and working with PGP staff to liaise between tutors, partner organizations, and justice-involved students. The members will gain experience in volunteer management and in the field of prison education, while deepening their knowledge of the carceral system and building relationships with our network of partner organizations supporting returning citizens in New York City.

EXPECTATIONS AND GOALS FOR THE SPECIFIC PROJECT ON WHICH AMERICORPS MEMBER IS SERVING:

The NYC Civic Corps Member will support the expansion and consolidation of PGP’s pool of volunteer tutors, with the goal of providing academic tutoring services to a growing number of justice-involved students in NYC, while educating volunteer tutors on the injustice manifest in the carceral system. The Member will help recruit volunteer tutors among graduate and undergraduate students in NYC by liaising with campus organizations and coordinating recruitment events at local colleges and universities (virtually or in-person depending on the status of the pandemic). Additionally, they will support PGP staff in developing and implementing tutor-training sessions, including moderating small-group discussions and tracking attendance. Finally, the member will liaise between volunteer tutors and students, ensuring that student and tutor attendance is appropriately tracked through PGP’s volunteer management platform, ensuring the smooth development of the tutoring sessions throughout the semester and serving as a point of contact for reentry organizations that refer students to the PGP. Each AmeriCorps Member will manage approximately 20 volunteer tutors per semester. They will aim at ensuring 90% volunteer retention through the academic year and at ensuring that at least 85% of volunteers feel fully prepared and supported to tutor justice-involved students (as determined through end-of-semester surveys).

MEMBER POSITION SUMMARY:

The AmeriCorps Member will support the growth of the Petey Greene Program in NYC. The Member will work with PGP staff and campus organizations to set up and run information and recruitment events at local colleges and universities as well as supporting tutor training sessions. Additionally, the Member will oversee approximately 20 volunteer tutors each semester, ensuring that they offer high-quality tutoring services to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated students. This will include setting time slots for tutoring sessions in collaboration with PGP’s partner organizations, ensuring that all volunteer tutors and students complete intake forms as well as midline and endline evaluations, tracking volunteer and student attendance and working with PGP staff to address fluctuations in attendance or engagement. The Volunteer Engagement Coordinator will work from home for approximately 75% of the time and PGP will provide a meeting space when in-person meetings resume (this work from home arrangement may change in the course of the member’s term of service).
